I have never been so relieved to see a set of keys in a little wooden box in my entire life. After six hours of driving from Esbjerg, a wrong turn somewhere near Aarhus that had me circling what felt like the same roundabout three times, and one spectacular moment where I dropped my entire bag of liquorice allsorts down the side of the passenger seat, I finally pulled up to our little holiday home in Grenaa. The mishap with the sweets still haunts me, honestly. I could smell them for the rest of the journey, wedged somewhere in the upholstery, slowly melting into what I suspect will be a permanent feature of the car.

The first thing that struck me was the quiet. Proper, thick, coastal quiet. Not the tense sort you get in cities where a siren might rip through at any moment, but a soft, woolly silence broken only by the occasional gull and what I later learned was a very determined blackbird who had claimed the garden fence as his personal stage. I stood there with my suitcase still in the boot, just breathing it in, feeling slightly foolish for not having done this sooner.

The cottage itself had that lovely, unhurried feeling you cannot fake. Nothing trying too hard to be Instagram-perfect, just solid Danish practicality with a garden that had clearly been loved by someone with more patience for weeding than I will ever possess. There was a little wooden table under a tree, slightly wobbly, with two chairs that did not match. I knew immediately that would become my headquarters for the week.

I did not bother with much unpacking. A few shirts in the wardrobe, my book on the bedside table, kettle on for a cup of tea that I drank while still standing at the kitchen window, watching that blackbird work through his repertoire. The garden was the real discovery. Not grand, not manicured, but generous in that way that makes you want to do absolutely nothing in it. A patch of grass that needed mowing but looked better for the neglect, some rambling roses I could not name, and a corner where someone had clearly spent years building up a compost heap with more dedication than I have ever applied to anything.

I spent that first afternoon doing what I can only describe as advanced loafing. I moved from the wobbly table to a patch of sunlight on the grass, then back again when the sun shifted. I read perhaps four pages of my book before dozing off, waking with a start when the blackbird changed his tune. My phone stayed in my bag. I had not planned this as any sort of digital detox, but the signal was patchy enough that it felt like the cottage was gently suggesting I leave it be.

There was a moment, somewhere around teatime, when I caught myself feeling guilty about the nothingness of it all. Old habits, I suppose. The urge to be productive, to have something to show for a day. I actually laughed out loud, there on my slightly damp patch of grass, at the absurdity of it. When had doing very little become something that required effort? The cottage did not care about my to-do list. The blackbird certainly did not. And slowly, wonderfully, neither did I.

By evening I had established what would become my routine without even trying. A slow breakfast outside, watching the garden wake up. Wandering with my book to wherever the sun had got to. Perhaps a little stroll down to the harbour later, though honestly the garden usually won. The days blurred into a rhythm so gentle I stopped counting them.

I never did retrieve all those liquorice allsorts from the car. But sitting there on my last morning, with a second cup of tea going cold and three pages read in an hour, I decided some things are better left where they fall.
