About East Jutland
I have never been so relieved to see a set of patio doors in my entire life. There we were, my partner and I, standing in the gravel driveway of our Grenaa Strand holiday home in East Jutland, while I performed an elaborate pantomime of checking every pocket for the third time. The keys, you see, were sitting on the kitchen table of our flat in Manchester. I had photographed them for the group chat with the caption "don't forget these, you absolute lemon" not four hours earlier. The lemon, it turned out, was me.

My partner maintained a heroic silence, the kind that speaks volumes in several Scandinavian languages. A text to the letting agency, a slightly desperate phone call, and forty minutes of me offering to make tea from the travel flask while we waited on the wooden garden bench. The bench, I noticed, was positioned to catch the afternoon light through a gap in the pine trees. Even in my disgrace, I clocked that this would be an excellent spot for doing absolutely nothing.

The local agent arrived with the spare key and what I can only describe as the most diplomatic chuckle I have ever received. We stepped inside to find a bright, unfussy living space with enormous windows looking out towards the Kattegat. The sort of view that makes you want to sit down immediately and stay there until someone physically removes you. This suited my plans perfectly, as my dignity required several hours of horizontal recovery.

We unpacked with the lazy efficiency of people who had no intention of going anywhere. The cottage had that particular Scandinavian gift for making simplicity feel generous. Clean lines, enough kitchen equipment to actually cook properly, and outside a wooden deck that demanded bare feet and a cup of coffee. I obliged on both counts before my suitcase was properly open.

The garden became our universe for the week. A modest lawn gave way to wilder growth, then dunes, then the grey-blue shimmer of the sea. I took to carrying a novel everywhere and reading perhaps three pages before being distracted by a bird, a cloud formation, or the compelling question of whether I needed another biscuit. The answer was always yes. There is a particular Danish biscuit, some butter number in a blue tin, that I became mildly obsessed with. My partner suggested I might pace myself. I suggested she might mind her own business.

Mornings dissolved into afternoons without any meaningful distinction. We walked to the local beach when the tide was right, paddling in water that politely informed us it was still May. The sand at Grenaa Strand is proper stuff, fine and pale, the kind that gets everywhere and makes you feel genuinely on holiday. We collected nothing, photographed little, and remembered almost everything.

On our third day I realised I had not checked my work email once. The horror I expected did not arrive. Instead I felt something dangerously close to contentment, sitting in that garden with my third coffee and a half-read paperback, watching a bumblebee navigate the clover with the determined incompetence I recognised from my own journey through life.

The evenings brought the particular pleasure of cooking simple food slowly. Fresh fish from the harbour, new potatoes, something green from the supermarket in Grenaa that we had popped to without any real urgency. Eating outside as the light stretched towards ten o'clock, that northern generosity of long days, felt like being let in on a secret.

I did not learn Danish. I did not visit any museums, castles, or "must-see" attractions within our five-mile radius. I walked, I read badly and thoroughly, I stared at the sea until staring at the sea became the activity itself. On our final morning I found myself on that same garden bench where I had waited in keyless shame, and I laughed out loud at the memory. My partner asked what was funny. Everything, I said, and nothing at all, which seemed about right for a week dedicated to doing very little, very slowly, very happily.
