I have never been so relieved to see a gravel driveway in all my life. After three hours of driving from Aarhus airport, during which I managed to get us lost twice thanks to my phone deciding that "scenic route" meant "send this fool through every farm track in central Jutland," we finally spotted the wooden sign for our holiday home near Ebeltoft. My partner sat in silence, which I have learned is far worse than actual complaining.

The mishap came within seconds of stopping. I leaped out of the car, desperate to stretch my legs and perhaps redeem myself with some competent luggage handling, and promptly stepped straight into a flowerbed that looked suspiciously like grass from above. Wet soil. Right up to the ankle of my only decent pair of trainers. There was a moment where I just stood there, one foot in the dirt, looking at my partner through the windscreen with what I can only describe as the expression of a man who has made a series of poor life choices. She wound down the window and said, "I'll get the key then, shall I?" No sympathy whatsoever.

The key was in the lockbox exactly where the instructions said, which felt like a small miracle given my current form. I hobbled after her, leaving a trail of soil and dignity behind me, and stepped into the sort of hush that only a wooden holiday home in the Danish countryside can provide. You know the kind - that particular Scandinavian quiet that makes you immediately want to whisper, even when you are alone.

First impressions of the place were genuinely lovely, which I needed after the flowerbed incident. The living area had that proper hygge thing going on - not the overdone version you see in shops back home, but the real deal with worn wooden floors and light coming through windows that actually looked out onto proper Danish beech woodland. I stood there dripping soil onto the welcome mat, taking it in, while my partner went to investigate the kitchen with the efficiency of someone who has not just ruined their footwear.

The kitchen, I should mention, was spotless and surprisingly well-equipped. I spotted a proper coffee machine and felt something close to hope. There was a moment of gentle self-reflection then, standing in my socks because I had abandoned my trainers outside in disgrace, realising that this was exactly what I needed. The chaos of the journey, my terrible navigation, the flowerbed - it all felt appropriately left at the threshold. The quiet of East Jutland does something to you. Even a serial overthinker like myself found it difficult to maintain proper anxiety levels with that quality of silence outside.

My partner emerged from the bedroom area declaring the beds "actually decent" which is high praise indeed from someone who once sent a hotel pillow back with a formal complaint. We spent the next hour in that pleasantly aimless way you do on arrival - unpacking without urgency, opening random cupboards to discover the previous guests had left behind a half-empty jar of something pickled, standing on the small wooden deck to watch the light change over the trees.

I never did get those trainers properly clean. They sit in our utility room at home now, still slightly stained, and my partner refers to them as my "Ebeltoft memorials." Every time I see them, I remember that first evening - the quiet, the light, the particular peace of having absolutely nowhere to be and nothing to prove. I would get lost in Jutland again tomorrow if it led me back to that same gravel driveway, though perhaps I would watch my step a little more carefully this time.
