About Djursland
The drive up to Djursland from Aarhus is straightforward enough, though I managed to complicate it by trusting my phone's pronunciation of Danish road names. "Fuglsø" came out sounding like someone sneezing, and I missed the turning for Grenaa twice. By the time we spotted the coast, I had worked myself into that peculiar state of holiday anxiety where you are desperate for everything to be perfect precisely because you have made it difficult. Fuglsø Strand sits on the eastern coast of Djursland, and the approach tells you exactly what sort of place it is. Pine trees, modest wooden houses, the smell of the Kattegat rolling in. Nothing flashy. Nothing trying too hard. We pulled up to our cottage and I immediately committed my second error of the day: attempting to reverse onto the gravel drive with the confidence of someone who has never successfully reversed onto gravel in their life. The crunch was not catastrophic, but it was audible. My partner got out to guide me, waving her arms with the restrained patience of a person who has done this many times before. The key was where they said it would be, which felt like a small miracle. I fumbled with the lockbox, dropped it once, and finally got the door open. The first thing that hit me was the smell. Not the artificial pine scent of a holiday let trying too hard, but something simpler. Wood. Salt. The faint mustiness of a place that spends winter months empty and waiting. It was immediately, embarrassingly comforting. I had worried the cottage would feel cramped. The photos on the booking site showed a straightforward layout, nothing grand, and I had convinced myself we would be tripping over each other. Instead, the living area opened up with that particular Scandinavian trick of making modest spaces feel intentional. Large windows facing the sea. A kitchen corner that had clearly been updated recently but not ostentatiously. I walked straight to the glass and stood there like a fool, watching the water, while my partner dealt with the bags I had abandoned in the doorway. The mishap came ten minutes later. Eager to test the famous Danish hygge for myself, I attempted to light the wood-burning stove using what I can only describe as misplaced optimism and a single firelighter. The smoke alarm had opinions. Loud, persistent opinions. I flapped about with a tea towel, opened every window, and stood red-faced in the draft while my partner calmly read the instructions I had ignored on the mantelpiece. She had it going properly within five minutes. I sat on the sofa, slightly humbled, watching the flames catch and wondering when I had become the sort of person who could not manage a simple fire. But here is the thing about first impressions. They are rarely about perfection, and Fuglsø Strand did not demand any. By evening, with the stove properly crackling and the windows dark against the sea, the chaos of the journey had settled into something else entirely. I could hear the water. Properly hear it, not the distant suggestion you get in busier places. The cottage felt less like a rental and more like somewhere someone had actually thought about spending time. We walked down to the beach before bed, poorly prepared for the cold, and stood watching the last light over the Kattegat. I thought about my ferry panic, my reversing, my failed fire. All that energy spent worrying, and the place had simply been waiting, patient and unbothered, for us to catch up. I slept better that first night than I had in months. |
