About Djursland
When we finally crunched up to Egsmark Strand, I practically fell out of the car and kissed the wooden decking. The cottage sat there like it had been waiting patiently for fools exactly like us, all pale Danish wood and big windows looking out towards the bay. My first impression, once I stopped sweating, was that the place seemed to be breathing more slowly than I was. Everything about it said: calm down, you idiot. The garden was the first thing that got me. Not a garden in the fussy British sense, with regimented borders and a lawn you feel guilty about. This was proper Danish coastal garden, all wild grasses and hardy shrubs that clearly did not need my help or opinion. A wooden table sat under a tree, positioned with the confidence of someone who knew exactly where the afternoon shade would fall. I immediately pictured myself doing absolutely nothing at that table for several hours. The picture did not disappoint. Inside, the cottage had that particular Scandinavian trick of feeling both simple and somehow generous. The living room opened straight onto a little terrace, and I made what I can only describe as an involuntary noise when I saw the water glinting through the trees. My partner gave me a look. I am not a man who normally makes noises at interiors. The mishap of our arrival became funny almost immediately, which is the test of a good holiday. We unpacked at the speed of people who had no intention of going anywhere else that day. I found a hammock strung between two trees and conducted what I can only describe as extensive research into its horizontal capabilities. The book I had been carrying around unread for six months finally got its moment. I read three pages and fell asleep. This became the pattern. The joy of Egsmark Strand, I quickly realised, was not in doing Djursland but in letting Djursland do whatever it wanted around you while you refused to participate. The garden filled with birds I could not name. The light changed across the bay in ways that made me understand why Scandinavians have so many words for it. I developed strong opinions about which deckchair was superior, as if this constituted a personality. On our second morning, I watched a heron stand in the shallow water for what must have been an hour. I was drinking coffee on the terrace, ostensibly reading my book, but really just watching this bird be more patient than I have ever been about anything. It felt like the heron was trying to tell me something. I am not a man who normally receives messages from birds, but I took this one. The message was: stop trying so hard. We did walk down to the little beach at Egsmark, a ten-minute stroll that felt like entering a different timezone. The water was that particular Baltic grey-green, and the stones made the satisfying crunch underfoot that sand never manages. I collected some, then felt self-conscious and put most back. This was the most strenuous decision I made all week. By day four, I had stopped checking my phone. Not as a deliberate digital detox, which always feels performative, but simply because there was nothing I wanted to know that was not already visible from the garden. The weather turned briefly grey and I felt genuinely thrilled at the excuse to light the wood burner and read in a chair that had already moulded itself to my exact shape. I have had holidays where I came back needing another holiday. This was not one of them. What I remember most is the particular quality of doing very little and not feeling guilty about it, which is harder than it sounds for someone who normally treats relaxation as another item on a to-do list. Egsmark Strand did not demand anything of me except presence, and I turned out to be surprisingly capable of that, given the chance. The goat, by the way, was still there when we left. It looked at me with what I choose to believe was newfound respect. |
