About Djursland
I have never been so grateful for a thermos of tea in my life. There we were, my partner and I, crawling along the Djursland peninsula in late November, our little hire car buffeted by winds that seemed personally offended by our presence. The sat-nav had given up three roundabouts ago, and I was attempting to read directions from my phone while also holding a flapjack that was disintegrating at an alarming rate. Inevitably, the flapjack won. Crumbs everywhere. Tea everywhere. Dignity, nowhere to be found.

We were bound for a holiday home near Ebeltoft, one of those traditional Danish timber-clad places that the photos had made look impossibly snug. The NOVASOL listing had shown it in summer glory, all green grass and bright skies, but we had deliberately chosen the off-season. Cheaper rates, we told ourselves. Fewer tourists. A proper Nordic experience. As the rain lashed horizontally across the windscreen and the afternoon light began its premature retreat towards four o'clock, I will admit to a flutter of doubt.

The final approach was down a narrow lane where the hedgerows seemed to lean in conspiratorially. Our headlights caught glimpses of bare branches, the last stubborn leaves plastered wetly to the tarmac, and then suddenly there it was: a low, dark silhouette against the grey sky, smoke curling from the chimney in a way that felt almost aggressively picturesque. I half expected a Hans Christian Andersen character to emerge with a lantern.

The key was in the lockbox as promised, though my frozen fingers made retrieving it feel like a minor Arctic expedition. The door opened with that particular resistance of well-made Scandinavian carpentry, and we stumbled into warmth and the smell of woodsmoke and something faintly of pine. The owner had left the heating on, bless them, and lamps glowed in the windows against the gathering dark outside.

I stood there in the hallway, still wearing my coat, dripping onto the flagstones, and felt something shift. The journey had been absurd, the weather was doing its best to discourage us, and yet this place had clearly been prepared with care. There were sheepskins draped over chairs, candles ready on the windowsills, and through the glass I could see the garden dissolving into November murk, the boundary between lawn and field and sky becoming beautifully indistinct in the twilight.

That first evening, we did not venture out again. We lit the wood-burning stove with the competence of people who had watched several YouTube tutorials, opened the wine we had sensibly purchased in Aarhus, and simply watched the darkness settle completely around us. The summer photographs had shown a bright, social space, but November had transformed it into something more intimate, more demanding of stillness. You could not ignore the season here; it pressed against the windows, it shaped every decision, it asked you to slow down in a way that British life rarely permits.

I thought about how differently this place would feel in July, with the garden in full use and the light lingering past ten. Pleasant, certainly, but perhaps interchangeable with a hundred other pleasant summer holidays. This November version was specific, particular, slightly challenging even. It required you to meet it on its own terms.

The flapjack incident already felt like a story from someone else's holiday, from a different kind of trip entirely. I was here now, in this warm room, in this dark season, and I found I did not mind the darkness at all.
