About Bornholm
I should have known the holiday was going to be eventful when I got my first proper look at Bornholm from the ferry deck and promptly dropped my phone into a cup of lukewarm coffee. There it was, this gorgeous green island rising out of the Baltic, all cliffs and pine trees and that particular Scandinavian light that makes everything look slightly too perfect to be real. And there I was, fishing my mobile out of what was left of an overpriced cappuccino, wondering if rice works on coffee-drenched electronics the same way it does on water.

The drive from Ronne to Vestre Sormark gave me just enough time to appreciate how quietly mad the Danish countryside is in late summer. Fields of wheat rolling about, the odd red-roofed farmhouse looking like something from a children's book, and me trying to navigate with a phone that now smelled vaguely of roasted beans and made every notification sound like a drowning robot.

Finding the property itself was straightforward enough, though I did manage to miss the turning twice because I was too busy gawping at a field of sheep who all appeared to be judging my parking. The house sat tucked among trees with that lovely weathered wood look that Scandinavian places do so well, all understated and sensible and somehow smug about it. I could already tell it was going to be one of those holidays where you feel slightly underdressed just looking at the architecture.

The key situation was where things properly started to unravel. I'd been sent a code, obviously, because it's 2024 and physical keys are apparently for peasants now. But in my infinite wisdom, I'd screenshotted the instructions on my coffee-soaked phone, which had now decided that particular image was the one file it would refuse to load. I stood there in the gravel driveway, jabbing at a blank screen, becoming increasingly aware that the neighbouring cottage had curtains that were definitely twitching. Nothing quite like providing free entertainment for the locals.

After what felt like forty minutes but was probably closer to eight, I remembered I'd also emailed the code to myself. Cue me squatting on my suitcase in the driveway, laptop precariously balanced, trying to get enough signal to load Gmail while a determined wasp investigated my left ear. The code worked eventually, the door clicked open, and I practically fell into the hallway with the grace of a newborn giraffe on an ice rink.

And then I stopped. Because the inside was exactly that particular sort of Danish calm that makes you feel like you've been shouting without realising it. Light wood everywhere, clean lines, windows framing green like deliberate paintings. The kitchen smelled faintly of pine cleaner and possibility. I dumped my bags in a heap that immediately felt wrong against the tidy minimalism, and stood there in my coffee-stained travelling clothes, suddenly aware that I was bringing a certain chaotic British energy into a space that very much was not built for it.

The mishaps didn't stop, of course. I managed to set off some sort of alarm trying to work the hob, spent twenty minutes convinced the shower was broken before realising I was turning the wrong dial, and got spectacularly lost trying to find the outdoor shower in the garden, ending up in a small thicket of brambles that the property description definitely had not mentioned. But sitting on the terrace that evening, nursing a reasonably priced Danish beer and watching the light do that long slow fade that northern summers specialise in, I felt something shift. The coffee phone was drying in a bowl of rice on the kitchen counter. The bramble scratches were starting to itch in that satisfying way. And Vestre Sormark, in all its composed Scandinavian glory, was slowly teaching me that perhaps not every holiday needs to begin with competence to end up being exactly what you needed.

I watched a rabbit dart across the lawn, utterly unconcerned by my presence, and decided that was probably the right attitude to adopt for the week ahead.
