About Bornholm
The drive north to Sandvig should have been straightforward. Forty-odd minutes of Danish countryside, a few coastal glimpses, perhaps a restrained nod of appreciation at a particularly handsome field of rapeseed. Instead, it became a rolling comedy of minor disasters. First, I confidently turned onto a farm track, convinced it was a shortcut, and found myself sharing the road with a tractor whose driver looked at me with the weary resignation of someone who has seen many tourists do exactly this. Then the sat nav, which had been muttering in Danish with increasing irritation, finally gave up entirely and suggested we were now in the Baltic Sea. I switched it off with what I can only describe as theatrical finality. By the time we crawled into Sandvig itself, I was in that peculiar state of frazzled determination where you will absolutely not admit anything has gone wrong, thank you very much. The village, when I finally allowed myself to notice it, was quietly lovely. Low stone buildings, a harbour that looked like it had been sketched by someone who really understood the appeal of boats, and that particular quality of northern light that makes everything seem slightly more significant than it probably is. Our holiday home sat near the coast, one of those traditional Bornholm places with timber framing and a roof that looked reassuringly solid against the island winds. I had grand plans for a dignified arrival, perhaps a moment of standing on the doorstep, breathing in the sea air, feeling properly on holiday. What actually happened was that I tripped over the welcome mat, dropped my keys in a flowerbed, and spent several undignified minutes rummaging among some very judgmental-looking lavender while my partner documented the entire episode on their phone for posterity. The interior, when I finally breached the threshold with the approximate grace of a seal flopping onto a rock, was immediately forgiving. Light wooden floors, that clean Scandinavian simplicity that somehow never feels cold, and windows that framed the sea like a painting someone had thoughtfully hung just for us. I stood there, still clutching a bit of lavender I'd accidentally uprooted, and felt the particular tension of the journey begin to dissolve. There's something about these Danish coastal homes, something in the way they're built for the weather and the light and the rhythm of island life, that makes your own chaos feel temporarily manageable. I made myself a cup of tea with the slightly too small mugs that seem universal to holiday lets everywhere, and took it to the window. The ferry mishaps, the tractor incident, my brief career as a lavender thief - they were already softening into the kind of stories you tell later with exaggerated gestures and selective memory. Outside, the Baltic did what it has done for centuries, being simultaneously present and indifferent, which is precisely what you want from a sea view when you've had a day of mild self-inflicted nonsense. My partner joined me, mercifully putting their phone away, and we stood there in comfortable silence. The light was beginning to turn that particular late-afternoon gold that Bornholm does so well, and somewhere in the village, a dog barked with the relaxed entitlement of a dog who knows exactly where it lives. I thought about unpacking, about the proper beginning of the holiday, about all the sensible things we should do. Instead, I drank my tea and watched a seagull execute a perfect landing on a nearby rock, and decided that some arrivals, however chaotic, get you exactly where you need to be. |
