About Bornholm
I have never been so relieved to see a wooden hut in my life. After a three-hour ferry from Sassnitz that had me clinging to a plastic seat and questioning every life choice that led me to a Baltic Sea crossing in mildly choppy weather, I then managed to miss the turning for Dueodde not once but twice. The second time involved a dramatic three-point turn outside a farm shop where three locals watched in silent, polite amusement. I waved cheerfully, as if this had been my plan all along, and finally spotted the little gravel track that led to our cottage.

The key was in a lockbox, which sounds simple enough. It was not. I spent a good ten minutes jabbing at the thing, convinced I had the wrong code, only to realise I had been holding the instruction sheet upside down. Gentle self-reflection number one of the holiday: perhaps I was not as ready for a relaxing break as I thought.

Then the door opened, and everything slowed down.

The Dueodde cottage is exactly the sort of place that undoes you. Not in a grand, sweeping way, but quietly, like someone loosening a knot you did not know was there. The living room smelled of pine and old books left by previous guests. The windows were slightly too large for the walls, which meant light poured in at slightly unreasonable angles. I dumped my bag on the sofa, made a cup of tea that tasted better than it had any right to, and stood in the garden doing absolutely nothing.

The garden was the real discovery. Not manicured, not wild, just settled into itself. A patch of grass that needed mowing but was not pushy about it. A wooden table with one wobbly leg that I never got round to fixing. Some hardy Danish shrubs doing their stoic best against the coastal wind. I spent the first afternoon simply walking its perimeter, which took roughly forty-five seconds, then doing it again more slowly. There was a small terrace where I positioned a deckchair at what I decided was the optimal angle for morning coffee and afternoon dozing. I never moved it. There was no need.

I had brought three books, ambitiously. I read one and a half, which I consider a triumph. The half was a murder mystery where I fell asleep during the denouement and could not be bothered to backtrack. The characters would still be there, I reasoned. They were not going anywhere. Neither was I.

The days developed a rhythm that would horrify my usual self. Wake without alarm. Stare at ceiling. Make coffee using the slightly eccentric hob-top pot that required supervision. Carry mug to garden. Sit. Read three pages. Put book down. Watch a bee. Consider whether to move. Decide against. Repeat.

I did walk to Dueodde Beach once, a fifteen-minute stroll through pine forest that smelled of resin and salt. It is famously the finest sand in Denmark, which I can confirm is not hyperbole. It squeaks underfoot, improbably, like walking on some enormous musical instrument. I paddled, got my trousers wet to an embarrassing degree, and walked back with the slow, damp gait of a man with no appointments whatsoever.

There were no day trips. No ambitious cycling routes. No ticking off Bornholm's notable sights, lovely as I am sure they are. Someone mentioned Nexø in passing and I nodded vaguely, as one might acknowledge a distant acquaintance at a party. Not today, thank you. I had a deckchair to occupy.

On the final morning, I found myself standing in that garden again, tea cooling in my hands, watching the same shrubs, the same light, the same nothing-happening. I thought about the ferry back, the drive, the emails waiting. Then I did not think about them. Not yet. The wobbly table needed another cup of tea first, and I was in precisely the right condition to provide it.
