I should have known the holiday had truly begun when I spent twenty minutes trying to unlock the wrong door. We'd ferried across from Ystad, driven through Bornholm's patchwork of fields and windmills, and arrived at our little cottage in Allinge-Sandvig with the triumphant exhaustion of people who had definitely earned a sit down. There were two identical red doors. I chose poorly. The key wiggled, I wiggled, I may have whispered some encouragement to it. Then a friendly voice from an actual window clarified that our place was the one with the slightly less wonky flower box. Charming, I thought, once I'd finished pretending I'd been "just checking the architecture."

The cottage sat tucked into a proper garden, the kind that does not demand anything of you. No manicured perfection, no anxious lawn stripes. Just grass that had clearly given up on ambition, some hardy shrubs that had survived Bornholm winters, and a wooden table where I immediately pictured myself doing absolutely nothing for several consecutive hours. This, I realised, was the entire point. I had not come to conquer Denmark. I had come to sit in it.

The first morning, I discovered the particular pleasure of a garden chair that creaks just enough to feel authentic. I brought out my book, a cup of tea that went cold because I kept forgetting to drink it, and the vague intention to perhaps walk to the harbour later. The harbour remained unpromised to. Instead I watched a bee make thoroughly inefficient progress through some clover and felt genuinely moved by its dedication to poor navigation. We have so much in common, I thought, and took this as a sign that I was settling in nicely.

Inside, the cottage had that particular holiday-home quality of being someone else's sensible choices made comfortable. Striped cushions. A kitchen that suggested people had actually cooked fish in it, rather than just photographed clean countertops. I kept opening cupboards to find things I did not need, which became a sort of entertainment. Ah, a fondue set. Good to know. A torch with questionable battery life. The thrilling possibility of a backgammon set. I never played backgammon. I enjoyed knowing I could.

The days developed a rhythm so lazy it barely qualified as rhythm. Morning tea in the garden, accompanied by the particular silence of a place where nobody needed you to be anywhere. Afternoon reading that merged imperceptibly into dozing, the book sliding onto my chest like a small animal settling in. Sometimes I would walk to the end of the garden and back, a journey of perhaps fifteen steps, and return feeling pleasantly exercised. The neighbouring cottage had a cat that visited without announcement or apology. I respected this enormously.

I did go to the harbour once, Allinge's little working one with boats that looked properly used and a smokehouse that made the whole place smell of possibility. I bought some smoked fish, carried it back like a trophy, and ate it in the garden with my fingers because finding a fork felt like unnecessary effort. It tasted of slow afternoons and my own excellent decision-making.

By the end, I understood something I had not planned to learn. The doing nothing was not nothing. It was the whole holiday, deliberately chosen, properly inhabited. The garden had not changed. The cottage remained modest and slightly creaky. But I had slowed down enough to actually be in them, which is harder than it sounds and more valuable than I expected. I locked the correct door on departure, which felt like unnecessary showing off. The wrong door and I had history now.
