About Bornholm
I had convinced myself that driving onto a ferry at four in the morning would feel romantic and spontaneous. It did not. What it felt like was stumbling through a dark car park in Ystad, clutching a coffee that tasted of regret, and somehow leaving my entire bag of toiletries on the passenger seat of a stranger's Volvo. I realised this three hours later, somewhere in the Baltic, when I patted my pocket for my toothbrush and found only a ferry ticket and a profound sense of foolishness.

Still, Bornholm appeared through the morning haze like a proper reward for my suffering. The crossing had been rough enough that I'd developed a theatrical relationship with a boiled sweet and the ship's handrail. By the time I reached Allinge, my stomach had settled and my dignity remained somewhere off the coast of Sweden.

The cottage sat back from the road, modest and unhurried, the sort of place that makes you immediately conscious of how loudly you've been living. I fumbled with the key box for an embarrassing length of time, performing what must have looked like a strange ritual dance in the gravel driveway. A neighbour watering her tomatoes watched with the polite, practiced patience of someone who has seen many holidaymakers lose their minds to a four-digit code.

Then I was in, and everything slowed down.

The garden was the first thing that properly stopped me. Not grand, not manicured, but settled in that particular way gardens become when they've been left to find their own character. A patch of lawn that had clearly given up on perfection years ago, a few fruit trees doing their own thing, and a wooden bench positioned with the precision of someone who understood exactly where the afternoon sun would linger. I sat on it before I'd even unpacked. This was, I realised, the entire point.

I had brought three books, ambitiously, and a running plan, laughably. The books got a workout. The running shoes remained by the door, gradually becoming a sort of decorative feature, a still life in unused good intentions. Each morning I would wake without an alarm, make coffee in the small kitchen with its slightly wonky drawer, and carry it to that bench. Sometimes I would read properly, turning pages with purpose. More often I would read the same paragraph four times, distracted by a bumblebee's incompetent relationship with a foxglove, or the particular quality of light through leaves that seemed to have nothing urgent to say to anyone.

The days developed their own rhythm, unplanned and unhurried. A wander down to the harbour became an event to anticipate rather than a destination to tick off. I would potter back with bread from the bakery, eat it too quickly standing at the kitchen counter, then feel pleasantly sleepy and read some more in the garden. The cottage's small terrace became my headquarters for doing absolutely nothing of consequence. I watched the weather change over the roof of the neighbouring house, counted the different birds I couldn't identify, and occasionally moved from bench to chair to grass simply to prove I still could.

There was a moment, perhaps on the third day, when I caught myself feeling guilty about this magnificent laziness. Old habits, the compulsion to be improving or achieving or at least photographing something impressive. I recognised it, smiled at my own ridiculousness, and turned back to my book. The garden didn't care. The bench certainly didn't. The tomatoes continued their slow, indifferent progress toward ripeness.

I never did replace those toiletries properly. I made do with supermarket shampoo and a toothbrush that cost more than it should have in the village shop. It became part of the cottage's charm, this improvised existence. The wonky drawer, the garden bench, the running shoes by the door, the unread third book. All of it accumulated into something I hadn't known I needed: permission to be gloriously, unproductively still.

On my last morning, I sat with my coffee and watched a cat from next door make its thoughtful way across the lawn. I had done almost nothing for a week, and it had been everything.
