About Als
I have never been so relieved to see a gravel driveway in all my life. After six hours of driving from Esbjerg, two wrong turns near Sonderburg, and one spectacular argument with a sat nav that insisted Danish farm tracks were "the scenic route," we finally rolled up to Skovmose Strand with me gripping the steering wheel like it owed me money. The kids were asleep, the boot was packed to bursting, and my partner had that particular expression that said we would be discussing my map-reading skills later over a cup of tea.

The mishap came during unpacking, because of course it did. I grabbed what I thought was the cool bag with the milk and butter, swung it out of the car with theatrical efficiency, and watched in slow-motion horror as the zip gave way and an entire bottle of washing-up liquid arced through the air like a liquid grenade. It landed squarely on my own foot, soaked my trainer, and somehow splattered the front door of the cottage with lemon-scented foam. Not our finest arrival. The neighbours, a sensible Danish couple in matching fleeces, paused mid-barbecue to observe this British spectacle. I gave them a thumbs up. They looked away, politely.

But here is the thing about Skovmose Strand. You cannot stay annoyed for long. The cottage itself sits in that perfect pocket of southern Als where the Baltic laps against the shore with almost embarrassing gentleness. Ours was one of those classic Danish summerhouse affairs, all pale wood and sensible windows, with a deck that creaked satisfyingly underfoot and a view straight out to the water. The children woke up, spotted the beach fifty metres away, and immediately forgot they had been complaining about my driving for the previous forty-five minutes. Small mercies.

Inside, the place had that particular lived-in charm you only get with proper family holiday homes. Nothing matched exactly, but everything worked. The kitchen had enough mugs for a small army, the sort of eclectic collection accumulated over decades of guests leaving one behind. I found a "World's Best Dad" mug that definitely was not mine and used it anyway, feeling faintly fraudulent. The living area opened onto that deck through sliding doors that stuck slightly, requiring the hip-check technique I perfected by day three.

That first evening, we did nothing ambitious whatsoever. My partner dealt with the washing-up liquid incident while I walked the fifty metres to the shore with the kids, who immediately began the universal childhood ritual of throwing stones into water and shrieking at the splash. The beach at Skovmose is not dramatic, not the sort of place that features in glossy brochures with cliff walks and hidden coves. It is better than that. It is shallow and sandy and safe, the water warming up nicely in late July, with little wooden jetties where Danish families tie up modest boats and teenagers lounge about looking bored in that particularly accomplished Scandinavian way.

We ate supermarket hot dogs on the deck as the light stretched out past nine o'clock, that endless northern summer evening that still feels faintly magical to someone raised on British weather. The kids were filthy, sandy, and inexplicably sticky despite having had no access to anything sticky. My trainer still smelled faintly of lemon. Somewhere out on the water, a boat puttered past with its navigation lights on, though it was barely dusk.

I sat there with my fraudulent mug of tea and watched my family descend into the happy chaos that constitutes our actual lives when we are not pretending to be sophisticated on holiday. The cottage creaked. The sea did that gentle Baltic thing it does. I thought about how I had stressed over the journey, over the packing, over whether we had booked the right place in the right bit of Denmark nobody we knew had ever visited. And here we were, with sand in the kitchen and a front door that still smelled faintly of Fairy liquid, and it was already perfect in its imperfect way.

That is the trick of Skovmose Strand, I think. It does not demand anything of you. No ambitious itineraries, no must-see attractions, no performance of having the best holiday ever for social media consumption. Just the water, the wood, the slow rhythm of days that blend into each other in the best possible fashion. We had a week ahead of us, and absolutely no plan for any of it beyond perhaps buying more milk and definitely locating the beach toys I was certain I had packed but almost certainly had not.

My partner emerged with wine, surveyed the scene, and actually smiled at my still-damp foot. The kids were now attempting to catch midges with their hands, which was going about as well as expected. Somewhere inside, the washing-up liquid bottle stood half-empty, a monument to my hubris.

I raised my fraudulent mug in a small, private toast to absolutely nothing in particular, and settled in for the long, lovely, unhurried nothing of it all.
