By late afternoon, the mishap of the morning had softened into family folklore. "Remember when Mum tried to burgle that man's house?" became the refrain, delivered with the kind of affectionate mockery that only your own children can truly master. I let them have it. There's something about arriving somewhere new that strips away your usual competence, and perhaps that's the point. The cottage asked nothing of me except presence. No emails, no performance, no need to be the person who has everything sorted.

We ended that first evening with supermarket hot dogs eaten on the terrace, wrapped in blankets against a breeze that still carried the memory of winter. The kids were asleep in their bunk beds before nine, a miracle of fresh air and emotional exhaustion. My husband and I sat with mugs of tea that we didn't finish, watching the light change over the trees, neither of us mentioning the heating or the wrong door or anything beyond the gentle pleasure of having finally, properly, arrived.
