About Als
I should have known the holiday had truly begun when I spent twenty minutes trying to unlock the wrong door. We'd driven up from Hamburg, a sensible six-hour haul with one stop at a petrol station where I paid twelve euros for a sandwich that tasted of regret, and by the time we reached Skovmose Strand on Als, my brain had apparently checked out without notifying the rest of me. The key fob beeped enthusiastically at the neighbouring cottage while I stood there, jiggling the handle and muttering about Danish engineering, until my partner gently pointed out that our actual holiday home was the one with the matching terrace furniture I'd admired in the listing photos. I was already standing on its decking.

The cottage itself, when I finally located it, turned out to be exactly the sort of place that undoes you. Not in any dramatic fashion - there were no sea views or hot tubs or anything that would impress on social media - but in the slow, creeping way that makes you realise you've been holding your shoulders somewhere near your ears for approximately three years. A low wooden bungalow with a generous garden that needed nothing from me except my presence. The previous guests had left a half-empty bottle of washing-up liquid and a deckchair positioned at what I can only describe as a mathematically perfect angle for afternoon dozing. I felt an immediate kinship with whoever they were.

We'd brought books, naturally. I'd packed four, which even I recognised as optimistic given my usual holiday pattern of reading the same paragraph seventeen times before falling asleep with a paperback across my face. But there was something about the particular quality of light in that garden - filtered through birch trees and bouncing off the little patio tiles - that made concentration feel not just possible but pleasurable. I finished a whole chapter on the first afternoon, which sounds pathetic until you understand that I cannot remember the last time I consumed written words without also scrolling through something on my phone every four minutes.

The garden became our universe. There was a modest barbecue that took three attempts to light properly, a patch of grass just long enough for lying flat and watching clouds rearrange themselves, and a hedge that provided sufficient privacy without making us feel like we were hiding from civilisation. I developed an embarrassingly passionate attachment to a particular garden chair, the kind with faded green webbing that squeaked when you shifted your weight. My partner suggested we should probably venture out to see actual Als, with its charming villages and coastal paths and whatever else the guidebook promised, and I made noncommittal noises while not moving.

We did walk to the nearby beach one morning, a ten-minute amble that felt appropriately Scandinavian in its understated beauty - flat stones, calm water, the occasional dog walker who nodded with that particular Danish reserve that manages to be friendly without inviting conversation. But mostly we didn't. Mostly we sat in that garden with coffee going cold and books going read and the occasional trip indoors to forage for cheese or to have a nap that felt less like indulgence and more like medicine.

By day three I'd stopped checking my watch. By day four I'd forgotten where I'd put my watch. The cottage asked nothing of me except to be there, fully and uselessly present, and I found to my surprise that I was still capable of such a thing. The wrong-door incident came to feel less like jet-lagged confusion and more like an honest introduction to a place that gently dismantles your competence and replaces it with something far more valuable: the profound, unhurried joy of doing absolutely nothing at all, and doing it rather well.
