I should have known the holiday had truly begun when I spent twenty minutes trying to unlock the wrong door. We'd driven up from Hamburg after an early ferry, winding through the flat Danish countryside with the radio playing something incomprehensible and cheerful, and by the time we reached Skovmose Strand I was in that peculiar state of tiredness where basic tasks become genuine challenges. The key fit, but the door wouldn't budge. I pushed, pulled, muttered, then noticed the house number. One digit out. The actual cottage was three doors down, and I can only hope the neighbours weren't watching my brief career as an amateur burglar.

The real door opened with satisfying ease, and we stepped into that particular hush of a holiday let that hasn't been disturbed for a few days. The air smelled faintly of pine and cleaning products, and through the windows I could see straight down to the water, the little beach curving away in a modest sweep of sand and shallow rock. Als has that quality of feeling slightly removed from the bustle of the mainland, even though the bridge makes connection simple enough. It's an island that doesn't feel the need to announce itself.

I dumped the bags with theatrical exhaustion and immediately claimed the spot by the garden doors, a slightly saggy armchair that would become my headquarters for the week. The garden itself was modest, a patch of grass with a few hardy shrubs managing against the coastal breeze, a wooden table and chairs positioned with evident optimism about Danish summer weather. There was a barbecue that looked like it had witnessed many evenings of sausages and mild confusion over instructions in multiple languages.

We didn't do much that first afternoon, and that was rather the point. I'd brought three books, an almost embarrassing stack, and I started the first one before we'd even properly unpacked. My partner pottered about, investigating the kitchen drawers and declaring the coffee situation "adequate," which in his vocabulary counts as effusive praise. We made tea and took it outside, watching a small boat putter across the sound towards the distant shore, moving with the unhurried pace that seemed to infect everything here.

The cottage had that lived-in quality that makes you relax instantly, the kind of place where you don't worry about the occasional scuff on the skirting board or the kitchen chair that wobbles slightly. It felt borrowed rather than rented, as though some generous acquaintance had simply handed you their keys and said "make yourself at home, the kettle's decent." I found myself moving slower, thinking slower, in a way that doesn't come naturally to me. I'm usually the sort who needs a project, a walk with a destination, some justification for the time spent. Here, the doing of very little felt like its own small achievement.

By evening we'd established our positions, me in the armchair with my book, him at the table with a crossword and frequent complaints about Danish vowels. We ate bread and cheese for supper, too lazy to attempt anything more ambitious, and watched the light change over the water through the big windows. I thought about how rarely I allow myself this, the simple pleasure of a day that accumulates nothing, goes nowhere, achieves only the basic fact of having been lived. It felt like a gentle reproach to my usual restlessness, and also like a gift I hadn't known I needed.

The mishap with the door became our running joke for the week, my failed criminal career, and every time I passed that particular cottage I'd offer a small salute to its patience with my confusion. But really, that wrong door was the perfect beginning, a small humbling before the greater surrender to doing absolutely nothing much at all, and finding it was exactly enough.
