I have never been so pleased to see a set of windbreaks in my life. The cottage itself appeared through a gap in the trees like something from a slightly scruffy Danish fairytale. Weatherboard cladding, a proper thatched roof that needed a bit of attention in places, and a garden that had clearly given up on formal landscaping and embraced a more chaotic philosophy. The key was exactly where the instructions said it would be, which felt like a small miracle given our track record with self-catering properties. I have spent twenty minutes searching for keys supposedly hidden in "obvious" places before, so this straightforward arrangement already put Nørre Kettingskov Strand ahead of the game.

Stepping inside, the first thing that struck me was the smell. Not the musty, closed-up-for-months odour I had braced myself for, but something cleaner, saltier, with a faint undertone of pine from the panelled walls. The living area was dominated by an enormous wood-burning stove that looked like it could heat a small village, and furniture that had clearly been chosen for sturdiness rather than style. There was something about that first hour, coffee-stained and dishevelled as I was, that set the tone perfectly. No glossy brochure perfection, no polished hotel reception. Just the gentle creak of floorboards, the distant sound of my family arguing over who got which bunk, and the realisation that we had absolutely nothing scheduled for the next seven days except whatever pace the cottage and the coastline dictated. I changed my trousers, accepted a mercifully large mug of tea from my still-grinning partner, and stepped out onto the small wooden terrace to breathe in proper Danish air for the first time that day.

The windbreaks flapped companionably in the breeze. Somewhere, a lawnmower started up. I thought about that cyclist, probably still chuckling to himself, and I laughed too. Some arrivals are smooth and sophisticated. Ours was gloriously, authentically messy, and I would not have changed a single thing about it.
