About Als
I have never been so relieved to see a wooden beach hut in all my life, and that includes the time I got caught in a hailstorm on Brighton pier. The journey to Mommark Strand had started with such promise, a smooth ferry from Ballebro to Hardeshoj, the sun glinting off the Little Belt like someone had scattered a bag of coins across the water. Then my phone died, my handwritten directions turned out to be for a completely different Mommark somewhere in Norway, and I spent forty-five minutes circling a potato field convinced I was being stalked by a particularly aggressive goose. Turns out it was just a plastic bag caught on a fence post. The goose, if there ever was one, remains a mystery.

The key collection was meant to be simple. A lockbox, a code, dignity intact. Instead I arrived at the neighbouring property and spent ten minutes wrestling with someone else's holiday home while a man in wellingtons watched me from his garden, not offering help, just witnessing my shame with the patience of a man who has seen many English people do very stupid things. When I finally admitted defeat and knocked on his door to ask where I had gone wrong, he took a long sip of coffee and said, "You are not the first. You will not be the last." His name was Henrik, and he turned out to be the unofficial mayor of Mommark Strand, a man who had retired from something in Odense and now devoted his energies to knowing absolutely everything about everyone.

Henrik walked me the fifty metres to my actual cottage, a modest wooden place with a deck that looked directly onto the beach. He did not rush. He pointed out the best spot for mussels, the woman who fed stray cats, the man who went swimming every morning at six regardless of weather. "He is Finnish," Henrik said, as if this explained everything. It sort of did.

The cottage itself was exactly what I needed after my navigational humiliation. Simple, clean, with that particular Scandinavian smell of wood and salt and something faintly medicinal that I later learned was the neighbour's homemade aquavit. I had barely unpacked when there was a knock at the door. A woman called Gitte, Henrik's wife, bearing a plate of something brown and sticky that she called brunkager. She examined me with the frank curiosity of someone who had heard about my lockbox performance and wanted to see the specimen for herself. "You walked around the goose field," she said. It was not a question. News travels faster than phone signal in Mommark Strand.

That first evening I walked to the small harbour, more a collection of weathered boats and optimistic fishing equipment than anything commercial. An old man called Preben was mending nets with fingers that moved independently of his attention, which was fixed entirely on me. He spoke no English, I speak barely any Danish, and yet we covered his entire medical history, his opinions on Swedish football, and his theory that the best flounder came from the eastern side of the harbour because the current "made them more honest fish." I understood perhaps thirty percent of this and agreed with all of it.

By the time I walked back to the cottage, the light doing that prolonged golden thing it does at Danish latitudes, I felt something shift. The embarrassment of my arrival, the goose, the wrong house, it all seemed like a necessary introduction. Henrik was watering his tomatoes. He raised his hand without looking up. "Tomorrow," he said, "I will show you where the aggressive goose actually lives." I had not asked. I did not need to. Some holidays you plan. Others, like Mommark Strand, simply allow you in on their own terms, one local character at a time.
