About Als
Properly routed at last, the final stretch to Mommark Strand unwinds through proper Danish countryside, all rolling fields and sudden glimpses of water that make you want to pull over immediately. We resisted, mostly because the car was packed to the roof with supplies and I had already tested my partner's patience with the tractor incident. Then the holiday home appeared, tucked among trees with that particular Scandinavian knack for looking both modest and exactly right. Red wood, white trim, the whole hygge fantasy in architectural form. I stood in the driveway feeling smug about my booking skills until I realised I had no idea which key box code I had actually set. Twenty minutes of increasingly creative combinations later, we were in. The first thing that struck me was the quiet. Not the uncomfortable, oppressive quiet of somewhere truly remote, but the settled, purposeful silence of a place that knows exactly what it is. You could hear the wind in the trees and, if you concentrated, something that might have been the sea or might have been my imagination running ahead of itself. The interior was spotless in that slightly unnerving holiday rental way, all pine smells and careful arrangement of practical objects. I immediately moved a lamp six inches to the left just to feel I had some ownership of the space. We dumped our bags with the chaotic energy of people who had been in transit too long and headed out to explore before the light went, which in late afternoon was already a concern. The path down toward the water starts practically from the doorstep, weaving through low scrub and suddenly opening onto Mommark Strand itself. I had seen photographs, obviously, but the reality of that sweep of coast catches you differently. The beach curves gently, pale sand, rocks scattered like someone gave up on a jigsaw puzzle. The water was that particular grey-green of the Baltic, not trying to impress anyone, just existing. A few locals walked dogs with the unhurried pace of people who know they live somewhere worth walking slowly through. I had planned nothing for this first evening beyond finding food and staying upright, which felt like ambition enough. We wandered toward what looked like a small cluster of buildings further along the shore, thinking perhaps a shop or somewhere to grab something simple. Instead we found a tiny harbour, barely more than a few boats pulled up and some weathered sheds that smelled of fish and rope and decades of practical use. An older man was coiling line with the methodical movements of someone performing a ritual he could do blindfolded. He nodded, we nodded back, and that was the full extent of our interaction. It was perfect. Getting slightly lost on the way back, we took a turning that looked promising and found ourselves on a narrow track between two fields, the sea visible in glimmers through gaps in the hedgerow. A bench sat there, apparently placed by someone who understood that this exact view needed acknowledging. We sat until the cold drove us back, not talking much, which for me is notable. I kept thinking about that tractor driver, how he must know every misleading turn and hidden path in this corner of Als, how he probably has his own bench somewhere that nobody else has found. The holiday home waited, warm against the cooling evening, and I understood already that this was going to be a different sort of trip than I had packed for. The mishaps were not really mishaps, I was starting to realise. They were the thing itself, the slow unfolding of a place that does not present itself all at once. I had come looking for Denmark and found something more specific, more accidental, more genuinely my own. The lamp remained six inches out of place. I would not move it back. |
