I have never been so grateful for a sat nav's patronising tone as I was driving towards Lavensby Strand. "Turn around when possible," it kept saying, in that clipped voice that somehow suggests you have personally disappointed it. I had missed the turning somewhere near Nordborg, distracted by a field of particularly judgemental-looking cows, and found myself on a narrow lane that grew progressively more agricultural until I was essentially sharing the road with a tractor and a man who waved at me with the resigned familiarity of someone who has seen many lost tourists before.

The mishap, though, came when I finally reached the holiday home. I had been picturing something modest, perhaps a bit windswept, the sort of place where you immediately check if the kettle works. Instead I pulled up to a handsome wooden house with enormous windows facing the sea, and in my flustered state I managed to reverse into the small wooden fence that separated the property from the beach path. Not hard, you understand. Just a gentle kiss of bumper against timber. But enough that a plank wobbled conspicuously, and enough that a woman walking her dog stopped to observe me with the purest Danish neutrality I have ever encountered.

"First time?" she asked, in excellent English, as if this were a medical condition.

I admitted it was. She nodded, introduced herself as Birgit, and spent the next twenty minutes explaining the history of Lavensby Strand while her dog, a serious-looking dachshund named Knud, judged me silently from the end of his lead. Birgit had lived in the area since the 1970s, when her husband had convinced her that Als was "the next big thing" in Danish coastal living. "He was wrong about many things," she said, with evident affection. "But not this."

The fence, she assured me, had been wobbling for years. The previous owners had installed it during what she called "their optimistic period," a phrase that seemed to carry significant local weight. She helped me find the property manager's number, then insisted on showing me the proper way to the beach, which involved a path I would never have discovered independently and which she described as "the one the Germans do not know about." This distinction appeared important.

I spent that first evening on the deck with a cup of tea that kept going cold because I was too busy watching the light change over the water. The house itself felt immediately comfortable in that particular Scandinavian way, all clean lines and surprising warmth, but it was Birgit's commentary that kept replaying. Her observation that the strand had "a personality, not always pleasant," her warning about the older gentleman who walked at dawn and would engage anyone in lengthy discussions about wind turbines, her firm instruction that the best bakery was in Nordborg but the better bakery was "a secret I will tell you tomorrow if you are still here."

I was still there, of course. The fence was easily mended, the property manager amused rather than annoyed, and I found myself lingering in the lane the next morning hoping to encounter Birgit again, or perhaps the wind turbine gentleman, or anyone who might offer another fragment of this small, specific world. The sat nav had been wrong about the route but right about the destination. I had turned around, after all, and found something better than efficiency.
