About Als
I have never been so grateful to see a gravel driveway in all my life. After three hours of driving from Billund Airport, most of it spent squinting at Danish road signs and arguing with a sat nav that seemed convinced Als was somewhere in the North Sea, we finally spotted the wooden sign for Lavensby. My partner was driving, which meant I was in charge of navigation, a role I have come to accept I am fundamentally unsuited for.

The mishap, because there is always a mishap with us, happened approximately four minutes from our destination. We stopped at a little supermarket in Nordborg for supplies, and I managed to drop a bottle of elderflower cordial directly onto my own foot. Not just any drop, you understand. I fumbled it like a cricket ball, watched it fall in slow motion, and then hopped about on one leg in the car park while elderly Danish shoppers pretended not to notice. The bottle survived. My dignity and my left trainer did not. I spent the rest of the journey with a sticky sock and a faint smell of flowers every time I moved my foot.

We turned down the lane to Lavensby just as the afternoon light was doing that lovely low thing across the fields. The property sits in proper countryside, the kind where you can hear yourself think for the first time in months. Our little cottage was the sort of red wooden affair you see on postcards, with white trim and a steep roof that looked ready for a proper Scandinavian winter. I limped out of the car with my sodden foot and just stood there for a moment, breathing in air that tasted of sea and pine and something else I could not quite place. Turned out to be the neighbour's compost heap, but still.

The key was in the lockbox as promised, though getting it out required the dexterity of a surgeon and the patience of a fisherman. My partner took over after I dropped it twice into the flower bed. We pushed open the door and were immediately hit by that particular smell of holiday cottages everywhere: clean linen, slightly old wood, and the ghost of a thousand previous dinners. It was wonderful. The kitchen was compact but properly equipped, not one of those rental places where you open a drawer to find a single bent fork and a can opener from 1973. I made straight for the kettle, because the British solution to all of life's problems starts with tea, and discovered I had packed teabags but no milk. Of course I had. We had driven past that supermarket not twenty minutes before, and I had bought elderflower cordial and some questionable Danish biscuits, but no milk. I sat on the little sofa with my black tea and my sticky foot and laughed until my partner came to see if I was having some kind of episode.

The view from the main window stopped me mid-giggle. Rolling fields down to the sound, with Sonderburg just visible in the distance if you squinted. A heron went past, slow and deliberate, as if checking we were up to standard. I thought about all the planning, the dropped bottle, the forgotten milk, the sat nav existential crisis. None of it mattered. We were here, in this quiet corner of Als, with a whole week stretching ahead and nothing more demanding than deciding whether to walk to the beach tomorrow or simply sit in the garden and watch the light change.

My trainer was still damp when I took it off that evening, and I suspect I will find elderflower stickiness in unexpected places for days to come. But standing barefoot on the wooden floor, watching the sun drop behind the trees, I felt that particular shift that happens when a holiday truly begins. The chaos of arrival had done its job. It had made the stillness feel earned.
