About Als
The mishap came immediately. I stepped from the car, stretched with theatrical satisfaction, and promptly twisted my ankle on a decorative stone. Not a large one. Not even an interesting one. Just a medium-sized grey lump that had sat there harmlessly since approximately the Bronze Age, waiting for a tired Englishman. I hopped about, swearing in a whisper so as not to disturb the profound Danish countryside silence. My partner laughed for the first time in ninety minutes. The stone, I maintain, moved. But then I looked up, and the ankle stopped mattering. Lavensby sits in that particular Danish way where everything seems arranged by someone with excellent taste and no urgency. The house is white, the shutters a soft green, the garden running down to meet fields that roll towards the sound like a promise kept. A wooden bench faces west, positioned by someone who understood that sunset here is not entertainment but occupation. I could see it from the drive, and I wanted already to be sitting in it doing absolutely nothing. Inside smelled of pine and something faintly marine, that clean salt edge that seeps into everything near Als. The floors creaked hello. The kitchen window framed a view so insistently peaceful I felt briefly accused of my own stress. We found the bedroom with its white linen and its deliberate simplicity, and I understood that someone had designed this place specifically to make a London flat seem like a cry for help. We did not unpack with any efficiency. We wandered. The garden had apple trees not yet in bloom but holding themselves ready, patient in the April chill. A hammock hung between two of them, sagging slightly as if already tested and approved. I touched it. I sat in it. I remained there for forty minutes while my partner explored inside, and I cannot tell you a single thing that happened because nothing did. A bird. Some distant sheep. The creak of rope. That was the point. The bench became my office. I brought out a novel I had carried for three months unread, and there I remained as the light changed, as my partner joined with tea, as the herring crisps somehow got finished. We talked little. The silence here is not empty but full, occupied by small sounds that ask nothing of you. I kept thinking I should plan something. A walk to the nearby shore, perhaps, or a drive to Sonderburg for provisions. The thought would rise, and I would look at the garden, and the thought would settle again like dust. This was the revelation Lavensby offered: that doing very little is not failure but practice, and I was out of practice. On our final morning I sat on that bench with coffee cooling, watching mist lift from the fields. My ankle had healed. My partner read beside me. We had seen almost nothing, done almost nothing, and I have rarely been so reluctant to leave anywhere. The stone still sat by the drive. I nodded to it. Some lessons come from unexpected teachers. |
