About Als
I have never been so grateful to see a wooden A-frame in my life. After a four-hour drive from Billund, during which I confidently ignored the satnav for what I called "the scenic route" and my partner called "getting hopelessly lost near Aabenraa," we finally rolled up to Købingsmark Strand in late October. The mishap, you ask? I had packed for "brisk autumnal Denmark" based on a weather app I checked three weeks prior. The reality was horizontal rain, a wind that made the car doors feel like they might detach, and me in a light jacket pretending my chattering teeth were merely excitement.

The cottage itself appeared through the grey like a cheerful red-and-yellow beacon. Novasol had described it as "cosy," which in holiday-letting language can mean anything from genuinely snug to "prepare to huddle." This one, thankfully, leaned toward the former. We fumbled with the key box, hands already numb, and practically fell through the door into a warmth that smelled faintly of pine and previous occupants' candles.

That first hour became a masterclass in seasonal adaptation. October in Als is not trying to impress anyone. The trees were doing that particular late-autumn thing where half the leaves cling on defiantly while the other half plaster themselves to every outdoor surface. Through the rain-streaked windows, Købingsmark Strand itself looked properly wild - not the gentle Danish beach of summer brochures, but something more honest and slightly intimidating. The Baltic was the colour of old pewter, and I watched a solitary figure in full waterproofs walk a dog that seemed to question its owner's life choices.

Inside, we enacted our immediate survival strategy. The wood-burning stove became the absolute centre of our universe. I am not too proud to admit that I have never successfully lit one before, and my first attempt filled the room with smoke and my dignity with holes. My partner, who had been wisely silent during my "scenic route" decision, took over with the quiet competence of someone who grew up with proper winters. By the time the flames were crackling properly, I was already rearranging my mental image of the holiday. This would not be the cycling-and-picnicking break I had vaguely imagined. This would be something slower, more enclosed, more deliberately simple.

The light itself dictated everything. The sun, when it bothered, sat low and brief, casting long shadows across the scrubby dune grass by mid-afternoon. We found ourselves rising earlier than usual, not through virtue but because the darkness by four in the afternoon felt like a gentle instruction to wind down. Mornings brought a particular quality of grey illumination that made the coffee taste more necessary and the view from the kitchen window somehow more Danish than Denmark itself.

That first evening, we walked briefly along the strand before retreating, sandblasted and laughing, to thaw our extremities. The beach in October is a different creature entirely - no ice cream, no towels, just the raw negotiation between land and sea. I felt briefly melancholy about the summer that had never been ours here, then recognised that particular autumn emotion for what it was: the season's gift of temporary reflection, soon replaced by the immediate pleasure of dry socks and the stove's reliable heat.

We were not disappointed. Merely recalibrated. And as the rain drummed against those A-frame windows and the darkness gathered early outside, I found myself genuinely grateful for the miscalculation that brought us here at exactly this time, in exactly this weather, with exactly the wrong jacket.
