About Als
I have never been so grateful to see a man in wellies holding a torch as I was at half past nine on a Thursday evening in rural Als. But I am getting ahead of myself.

The journey from Sonderborg had been straightforward enough. Forty minutes of flat Danish countryside, fields of yellow rapeseed glowing in the late summer sun, the occasional red-roofed farmhouse slipping past. I had the windows down, some Danish radio I could not understand playing cheerfully, and a growing sense of smugness about my organisational skills. The sat nav said twelve minutes to go. I had stopped for supplies. I had remembered the key code. I was, in short, winning at holidays.

Then the sat nav announced I had arrived. I had not arrived anywhere recognisable. I had arrived at a gravel track between two fields, one of which contained a very large and very unimpressed-looking horse. The track led to a farmyard with no lights on. I checked my phone. The booking confirmation said Købingsmark. The map said I was at Købingsmark. The horse said nothing, which somehow felt worse.

I drove up and down the same stretch of road three times, each pass more desperate than the last. The sun had properly set now. My phone battery, because phones sense weakness, dropped to eleven percent. I tried the property number. No answer. I tried the emergency line. A recorded message in Danish that I could not follow. I sat in the car, surrounded by absolute darkness and the distant smell of what I told myself was just countryside, and contemplated sleeping in the back seat with a packet of Danish butter biscuits for a pillow.

That was when the torch appeared.

He emerged from a neighbouring property, this man in wellies and a faded green jacket that had seen decades of proper use. Sixtyish, white beard, the kind of face that suggested he had opinions about the weather and was usually right. He did not look surprised to find a foreigner parked in the lane looking pathetic. He looked, if anything, faintly amused.

"You are lost," he said. Not a question.

I explained about the booking, the code, the horse. He listened with the patient expression of someone who had heard many variations of this story before.

"The house you want," he said slowly, "is the next turning. But the sign, it fell down in the spring storm. Nobody has fixed it." He said this with a particular Danish shrug that managed to convey both resignation and mild contempt for whoever was meant to fix signs. "I will show you. Follow my tractor."

He walked back to a shed and emerged on an ancient Ferguson that sounded like it was running on determination and grudges. I followed him at walking pace for perhaps four hundred metres, around a bend I had somehow missed twice, down a narrower track, and there it was. The Købingsmark house. Lights on, welcoming, exactly as photographed. I could have wept.

I got out to thank him. He had already climbed down and was inspecting my car with the frank curiosity of a man who had never owned anything with fewer than two hundred thousand kilometres on the clock.

"English?" he asked.

I admitted it.

"You will like it here," he said. "Quiet. Not like Sonderborg." He said Sonderborg the way some people say "the office." "I am Henrik. I live there." He pointed to a low house visible through trees, maybe two hundred metres away. "You need anything, you knock. Not too early. I am not a morning person."

I thanked him again, offered to buy him a beer sometime, immediately worried this was too forward for Danish reserve. He simply nodded. "Friday. The harbour bar in Kegnaes. Six o'clock. They do good fried fish."

Then he was gone, tractor rattling into the darkness, leaving me with my bags and my foolishness and a strange warm feeling that had nothing to do with the heating.

The house was perfect. Properly Danish, all pale wood and practical furniture and windows that actually opened properly. I put the kettle on, stood in the kitchen, and laughed at myself. All that panic, all that sitting in the dark talking to a horse, and the solution had been a neighbour with a torch and a tractor and absolutely no urgency about anything.

I thought about how I would have handled this at home. Phoned three times, left complaints, demanded compensation probably. Here, I had accepted help from a stranger, offered beer, made an actual plan. Something about the place had already slowed me down, knocked the edges off my usual need to control everything.

The next morning I walked down to the shore, maybe ten minutes on foot. The beach at Købingsmark is not dramatic. It is flat stones and calm water and a view across the sound that makes you understand why Danes do not bother with grandeur. They have enough with quiet. An older woman was swimming, proper sea swimming in a proper swimming costume, emerging pink and satisfied. She nodded at me as she passed, no small talk required, just acknowledgment of shared morning space.

I thought about Henrik's fried fish invitation. I thought about how I had arrived convinced I was self-sufficient, that my booking confirmation and my planning were all I needed. The sign had fallen down in spring. Nobody had fixed it. Some things you cannot plan for. Some things you need a man in wellies for.

I went back to the house, made more tea, and decided to do absolutely nothing until at least lunchtime. It felt like the most radical thing I had done in months.
