About Kvarner Bay
The property sat perched on the hillside like a well-kept secret, and arriving in the off-season felt rather like being let in on one. The summer crowds had long since scarpered back to their city lives, leaving the Kvarner Bay to those of us who do not mind a bit of atmospheric weather. I fumbled with the key box in the fading light, my fingers stiff from the car's inadequate heating, and managed to drop the code sheet into a puddle. Of course I did. I stood there laughing at my own ridiculousness, rain trickling down my collar, and something about that moment of pure incompetence made the whole trip feel properly mine at last. Stepping inside was like walking into a different world entirely. The apartment had that particular stillness of a place waiting to be lived in again after the summer rush. I could smell the faint, clean scent of closed-up rooms and distant pine from the terrace. The heating hummed to life with a satisfying clunk, and I found myself gravitating toward the windows, drawn by the theatrical grey of the bay below. In summer, I supposed, one would throw open those doors and never close them. Now they framed a view of churning water and bare trees that felt almost meditatively melancholy. I had packed for a Croatian holiday with the optimistic wardrobe of a person who once visited Dubrovnik in April and never quite recovered. My thin linen shirts hung limply in the wardrobe while I borrowed the property's spare blanket and made a nest on the sofa. The kitchen, I discovered, was stocked with the basics left by thoughtful previous guests - a jar of local honey, some oil with herbs suspended in it like a science experiment. I brewed tea and watched the light fade entirely, the streetlamps of Opatija flickering on across the hillside in a sequence that suggested someone was walking along throwing switches. The morning brought a transformation I had not expected. The rain had scrubbed everything clean, and weak winter sunshine turned the bay silver. I walked down to the Lungomare, that famous coastal promenade, wrapped in every layer I possessed. Other walkers nodded with the companionable solidarity of people who have chosen the quiet season deliberately. We passed the grand old Habsburg villas, their gardens sleeping under mulch and expectation, and I felt a peculiar privilege in seeing the town so unadorned. No ice cream queues, no sun lounger politics, just the raw bones of a place that has been welcoming visitors since the 1840s. Back at the apartment, I cooked simple meals and read books I had been meaning to finish for years. The seasonal rhythm suited me better than I cared to admit. I am usually one for cramming activities into holidays, for coming home needing another break. Something about the shortened days and the occasional storm rattling the windows forced a slower pace. I found myself staring at the view for longer stretches, noticing how the light changed across the water, how fishing boats moved with different purpose in winter seas. On my final evening, I sat on the terrace wrapped in that borrowed blanket, watching the last of the daylight leak away behind the Ucka mountains. It was properly cold now, the kind of cold that makes your nose run and your eyes water, and I loved every ridiculous minute of it. I thought about how different this would all look in July, crowded and sun-drenched and undoubtedly lovely, but not this. Not mine in this particular way. I left the honey jar a little emptier than I found it, and took a photograph of my sodden map as a bookmark in my holiday memory. Some trips are about what you do, and some are about what the doing of very little reveals. This one, I suspect, will keep teaching me things long after I have forgotten what I packed. |
