About Kvarner Bay
I have never been brilliant at following satnav instructions, and my arrival in Malinska proved this beyond all doubt. There we were, my partner and I, circling the same roundabout near Krk town for the third time, bickering about whether "turn left" meant immediately or after the petrol station. In my defence, the island of Krk has more olive groves than road signs, and I had been lulled into a false sense of competence by the smooth drive down from Rijeka airport. The mishap came when I finally spotted what I thought was our lane, accelerated with misplaced confidence, and promptly scraped the hire car's bumper against a low stone wall that had been patiently waiting there since approximately 1952. The wall was fine. The bumper was not. My dignity was in tatters.

We limped the final few hundred metres to our holiday home with me gripping the steering wheel like a man about to face a tribunal. But then the gates opened, and something in my shoulders unclenched. The place sat tucked into a quiet corner of Malinska, all pale stone and terracotta roof tiles, with a garden that seemed to have been arranged by someone who understood the profound value of doing absolutely nothing. Lemon trees in terracotta pots. A shaded terrace with a table that begged for long breakfasts. Lavender bushes humming with bees too lazy to sting anyone. I stood there with the car keys still in my hand, the bumper incident already fading, and thought: I could stay here for a fortnight and not move more than ten metres from this spot.

The first morning set the tone. We woke without an alarm, which felt almost illicit, and took our coffee to the garden in pyjamas. The Kvarner sun climbs slowly here, not like the aggressive Mediterranean glare you get further south. It filters through the pine trees first, then warms the stone terrace by mid-morning. I had brought three novels, which was optimistic for a normal holiday but turned out to be barely adequate. I read on the sun lounger, moved to the hammock when that felt too structured, and occasionally wandered to the kitchen for another coffee or a chunk of the local sheep's cheese we had bought from a village shop.

My partner developed an almost spiritual attachment to the garden's small barbecue. Each evening he would light it with ceremonial slowness, consulting the coals as if they were runes, while I sat with a glass of Malvazija and watched the light change over the bay. We could see a sliver of water from the terrace, enough to remind us the sea existed without obliging us to actually go to it. This was the revelation of the trip. The sea was ten minutes' walk away, the town perhaps fifteen, and we visited both exactly twice in ten days. The rest was garden, books, the occasional dip in the small pool, and conversations that meandered nowhere in particular because there was nowhere we needed to be.

I had worried before coming that I might feel guilty about this inertia. I am normally someone who researches walking routes and historical sites, who returns from holidays needing another holiday. But Krk in late spring does something to that impulse. The island has been here since before the Romans; it will manage without my thorough inspection. Instead I found myself noticing small things with embarrassing intensity. The way the afternoon light turned the lemon leaves translucent. The particular rhythm of distant church bells from Malinska's harbour. How the local wine tasted different at six o'clock versus eight, as if time itself was an ingredient.

On our final evening, I sat on the terrace long after dinner, watching moths circle the outside light and listening to nothing much at all. The bumper scrape had cost us forty euros at the hire desk, money I considered a fair price for the lesson it taught me. Some arrivals are messy. Some walls have been waiting longer than your patience. And sometimes the best thing a holiday can offer is the radical, unglamorous pleasure of slowing down until you can feel your own heartbeat again.
