I have never been so relieved to see a gravel driveway in my entire life. Three hours, two wrong turns, and one spectacular argument with a sat nav that insisted "Vodnjan Golubovo" was apparently located inside a vineyard belonging to a very unimpressed local farmer. I was ready to abandon the hire car and simply live in Istria as some sort of feral olive picker.

The mishap, if you can call a full forty-five minutes of reverse-gear terror a mishap, came when I convinced myself I could "shortcut" through Vodnjan town centre. I cannot. The streets narrow to the width of a determined cat. I found myself wedged between a stone wall and a parked scooter, performing a seventeen-point turn while an elderly gentleman watched from his doorway with the patient expression of someone who has seen this exact scene approximately four thousand times before. He offered me a fig. I accepted. We did not speak. It was one of the more profound moments of my life.

By the time I crunched up to the property, I had sweated through my shirt, developed a twitch in my left eye, and forgotten entirely what relaxation felt like. Then the garden swallowed me whole.

The first thing that struck me was the silence. Not empty silence, but the busy, gossiping quiet of a place that has absolutely nowhere to be. Cicadas having their afternoon meeting in the pine trees. A distant dog making a half-hearted comment about something. The soft thud of an olive dropping somewhere, already bored with being on the branch. I stood there with my ridiculous suitcase and simply breathed. The twitch in my eye stopped.

I did not explore Istria that first day. I did not visit the Brijuni Islands or hunt for truffles or do any of the admirable things the guidebooks recommend within a few miles. I found a sun-lounger with a strategic tree shadow for afternoon reading, and I committed to absolutely nothing. The garden at Vodnjan Golubovo is not manicured or performative. It is simply there, generous and slightly unkempt, full of corners that feel discovered rather than designed. I spent twenty minutes watching a lizard make questionable decisions on a stone wall. I have no regrets.

The cottage itself has that particular quality of feeling immediately borrowed rather than rented. The kind of place where you stop worrying about coasters by day two and start leaving books face-down on armchairs. I made coffee in the small kitchen and carried it outside, then forgot to drink it while watching clouds move across the sky with the unhurried pace of creatures that have never encountered a deadline.

There is something deeply corrective about doing very little in a place that asks nothing of you. No itinerary, no achievement, no story to bring back beyond "I read three-quarters of a novel and occasionally moved my chair to follow the shade." The nearest shop in Vodnjan provided bread, cheese, and tomatoes that tasted like actual tomatoes, which felt like sufficient triumph for any twenty-four hour period.

I suppose I should mention the pool, which I did use, though mostly to float on my back and contemplate whether I could justify moving to Istria permanently. The water was the temperature of a perfect bath that has been left for precisely the right amount of time. I made no decisions more complex than "shall I turn over now?" Usually, the answer was no.

By evening, I had achieved that particular state of horizontal consciousness where even reaching for a drink seems like a lot of administration. The garden softened into gold, then blue, then the particular darkness of countryside where stars actually matter. I sat with a glass of local wine and thought about how thoroughly I had failed to do anything worth mentioning, and how completely satisfied I felt about it.

The sat nav never apologised, of course. But as I sat there, slightly mosquito-bitten and entirely still, I decided I might write it a thank-you letter anyway.
