About Istria
The trouble began with the key safe. The owner had sent instructions that seemed straightforward enough: third fence post, grey box, code 4721. Except the fence had approximately forty-seven posts, ranging from pristine white to a sort of melancholic grey-green that could reasonably be described as "grey" if you were feeling generous. My partner, Mark, stood in the gravel driveway muttering about "subjective colour perception" while I crawled along the perimeter like a very confused burglar. A neighbour's cat watched with undisguised contempt. I found the actual box on the fifth attempt, behind what I can only describe as a decorative wheelbarrow that had achieved retirement status. The code worked, which felt like a minor miracle. The key turned in the lock with that satisfying clunk you only get with solid Croatian engineering. We stepped inside and were immediately hit by that particular holiday-home smell - somewhere between clean linen, distant lavender, and the ghost of a thousand previous barbecues. The sort of smell that makes you simultaneously relaxed and aware you're sharing space with strangers' memories. Then came the great electricity incident. I'd spotted the induction hob and, city-dweller that I am, confidently placed our metal kettle directly upon it. The resulting noise was somewhere between a disappointed sigh and a small explosion. Mark, who had been unpacking wine in the kitchen, emerged to find me holding the kettle like it might bite me, while the hob flashed accusatory red lights. Turns out the kettle was aluminium. Turns out I should know this. Turns out Mark now has material for approximately the next decade of gentle mockery. But here's the thing about first impressions - they're rarely the whole story. Once I'd stopped trying to destroy small appliances, I actually looked around properly. The stone villa had that wonderful Istrian character you can't fake: thick walls that promised cool interiors even in August heat, wooden beams that had probably witnessed more relaxed summers than I could imagine, and those lovely terracotta floors that feel permanently warm underfoot. The kitchen, despite my assault upon it, was genuinely well-equipped in that practical European way - none of the ornamental nonsense you get in British holiday lets, just proper knives, decent pans, and a fridge that actually kept things cold. I stepped outside to recover my dignity and found the terrace. That's when the proper arrival happened. Liznjan stretched out below, all red roofs and green shutters, with the Adriatic glinting in that particular way it does when the afternoon light hits it. Somewhere, a dog barked lazily. Somewhere closer, Mark opened the wine. The neighbour's cat had followed me out and now wound between my ankles with what I chose to interpret as forgiveness. We'd got lost twice driving from Pula airport. I'd argued with a key safe. I'd nearly melted a kettle. And yet standing there, with the smell of pine and salt and somewhere distant grilling fish, I felt that particular holiday shift - the one where you stop being a person trying to get somewhere and start being a person who has actually arrived. Mark handed me a glass. "To aluminium," he said, because he is insufferable. I drank anyway. The sun dipped lower. The cat claimed the best chair. And Liznjan, patient and sun-baked and entirely unbothered by our chaos, finally let us in. |
