I have never been more grateful for air conditioning than the moment I stepped out of our hire car in Makarska last July. The journey from Split Airport had been straightforward enough, a scenic crawl along the coastal road with the Adriatic winking at us through the pines, until I confidently directed my other half down what I insisted was a shortcut. It was not a shortcut. It was a steep, narrow lane apparently designed for goats with excellent suspension, and by the time we reached the villa, the poor Fiat was making sounds I had never heard from a vehicle before.

The heat hit us like a warm, wet blanket the second we opened the doors. Proper Dalmatian summer heat, the kind that makes you understand why the locals eat dinner at ten and move at the pace of a sunbathing cat. I had booked this place partly for the pool, partly for the terrace with its promised sea views, but mostly because the photos showed a shady pergola covered in grape vines that looked exactly like the sort of spot where a person might recover from their own terrible navigation.

The villa sat on a hillside just above the town, close enough that we could see the famous Makarska Riviera curving below, far enough that the evening bustle became a pleasant hum rather than an intrusion. Our host, a cheerful woman called Marija, appeared from next door with cold bottles of water and a bowl of cherries from her own tree. She explained that we had arrived during the absolute peak of the season, when the lavender was just finishing its bloom up in the Biokovo hills and the sea temperature had reached that perfect state of being refreshing without requiring any bravery whatsoever.

I remember standing on that terrace with my cherry-stained fingers, watching the late afternoon light turn everything golden, and feeling the particular smugness that comes from having chosen correctly. The pool shimmered with invitation, though we both knew we would not swim until evening. This is something the July heat teaches you quickly in Dalmatia: surrender. You do not fight it. You adapt your entire day around it, become nocturnal, become Mediterranean.

Marija showed us the outdoor kitchen, explaining that in high season her family practically lives outside. The stone barbecue, the long wooden table, the string lights she would help us hang if we planned any late dinners. She said this with the knowing tone of someone who has watched countless British families learn the same lesson: cooking indoors in thirty-five degrees is an act of madness. We nodded, already converted.

That first evening, we walked down to the harbour as the sun finally began its leisurely descent. The promenade was coming alive, locals and tourists alike emerging from their afternoon hibernation. Restaurant terraces were filling with the clink of glasses and the smell of grilled fish. I wore linen trousers for the first time in my life and finally understood their purpose. My other half, still slightly cross about the goat track, admitted that the view from our terrace might justify a certain amount of automotive trauma.

We bought ice cream and sat on a bench watching the boats, and I felt that particular holiday sensation of time expanding. The heat had slowed everything down, forced us into a rhythm we would never choose at home. No rushing to sights, no packed itineraries. Just the sun, the sea, and the gradual realisation that the best moments often come from getting slightly lost and arriving exactly where you needed to be.
