About Continental Croatia
When I finally arrived at the cottage, flustered and forty minutes late, the whole thing felt rather like discovering a secret. The Zagreb Bedenica sits in that gentle, rolling countryside they call Continental Croatia, where the pace seems to have been set sometime in the 1950s and nobody has seen fit to change it. My first impression was of green everywhere, proper thick green, not the polite garden-centre variety but the sort that has been quietly getting on with growing without anyone making a fuss about it. The cottage itself looked solid and unbothered by my dramatic entrance, with a tiled roof and walls that suggested they had seen plenty of arrivals more composed than mine. I dumped my bags with the theatrical exhaustion of someone who has survived genuine hardship, though in truth my only struggle had been with my own incompetence. Then I did something I had not planned at all. I sat down in the garden and simply stayed there. The afternoon was warm without being oppressive, the kind of warmth that makes you feel clever for having found it rather than punished by it. A wooden bench beneath a tree became my headquarters. I had brought three books with the ambitious intention of reading them all, and I managed perhaps six pages of the first one before dozing off with it on my chest. That set the pattern for my days, really. I would wake without alarm, make coffee in the small kitchen with its slightly wonky cupboard doors, and wander outside to assess the morning. Sometimes this assessment took two hours. The garden was large enough to feel exploratory without requiring actual effort, with fruit trees I could not identify and a patch of lawn that seemed to invite lying down. I obliged frequently. A small terrace with basic furniture became my dining room, my reading room, my office for the important business of watching clouds move across the sky. I did walk to the village once, a twenty-minute stroll that felt like genuine exercise given my otherwise stationary existence. I bought bread and cheese and a bottle of local wine, then hurried back to my bench like someone returning to a vital appointment. The appointment was with doing absolutely nothing, and I was determined not to be late. There is something particular about slowing down in a place that has never sped up. Continental Croatia does not perform relaxation; it simply exists in a state that makes your own frantic energy feel faintly ridiculous. By my third day, I had stopped checking my phone entirely. By my fifth, I had forgotten what day of the week it was and felt genuinely proud of this achievement. On my final morning, I sat with my coffee and watched mist lift from the fields beyond the garden. I thought about my sunflower-field disaster and smiled, because that frantic, lost version of myself already felt like someone I used to know. The Zagreb Bedenica had not offered excitement or spectacle, and that was precisely its gift. I left with my unread books, my slightly expanded waistline, and the certain knowledge that I had done nothing remarkable whatsoever, which was, in its quiet way, absolutely perfect. |
