About Continental Croatia
The cottage itself appeared down a gravel lane flanked by walnut trees, and I will admit to a small cheer that was probably louder than necessary. It sat there like something from a storybook, all honey-coloured walls and a terracotta roof that had settled comfortably into the landscape over who knows how many years. The garden was the first thing that properly stopped me in my tracks. Not because it was manicured or showy, but because it had that particular quality of somewhere that has been loved without being fussed over. There were fruit trees I could not identify, herbs growing in slightly chaotic clusters, and a wooden table under a vine-covered pergola that immediately announced itself as my headquarters for the foreseeable future. I dumped my bags with the enthusiasm of a man who had spent six hours in a hire car and made straight for that table. The key had been in a lockbox, the instructions refreshingly brief, and within twenty minutes I was sitting with a cup of tea that tasted better than any tea had a right to, doing absolutely nothing at all. This, I realised with the gentle shock of recognition, was the entire point. The days that followed settled into a rhythm so lazy it barely qualified as rhythm. Mornings began with coffee in the garden, watching the light move across the grass and wondering if I should perhaps do something productive. The answer was always no, and this became a source of genuine pride. I read three books that had been sitting on my shelf since approximately 2019, moving between the wooden table, a hammock that creaked satisfyingly with every adjustment, and a patch of grass near the plum tree where the shade fell just right after midday. There was a small market in Varazdin town, close enough to wander through without it becoming an expedition. I bought cheese and bread and tomatoes that actually tasted of something, then retreated to my garden kingdom to consume them with the solemn attention they deserved. The thermal springs at Toplice proper were a short stroll away, and I did visit them once, floating in warm water with the contented expression of a man who has fully committed to uselessness. On my final evening, I sat with a glass of local white wine and watched a cat that was not mine stalk through the long grass at the garden's edge. I thought about all the holidays where I had rushed from sight to sight, ticking boxes, accumulating experiences like stamps in a passport. There was something quietly radical about this instead, this deliberate, joyful slowness. The plum tree dropped a fruit nearby, heavy and ripe. I did not pick it up. I would get to it eventually, or perhaps I would not. The cat caught something small and unidentifiable. The wine was excellent. Continental Croatia had not asked me to be anything other than present, and for that week at least, I had managed it with something approaching grace. |
