I should have known the Sat Nav was up to no good the moment it tried to send me down what looked like a farm track paved with good intentions and loose gravel. There I was, halfway through a five-hour drive from Zagreb, convinced I was about to discover the "scenic route" to Pozega Brestovac. What I discovered instead was a very patient Croatian farmer, three confused goats, and the realisation that my phone had been quietly dying for the last twenty minutes without so much as a warning beep.

The actual arrival was, in its own way, equally chaotic. I pulled up to the property just as the late afternoon sun was doing that golden thing across the Slavonian countryside, and promptly dropped my entire bag of groceries attempting to wrestle the gate open. There is something deeply humbling about chasing a runaway tomato down a gentle slope while clutching a bottle of local Grasevina and muttering apologies to nobody in particular. The tomato escaped into a hedgerow. I like to think it found a better life.

Pozega Brestovac itself, once I stopped flapping, revealed itself slowly and rather wonderfully. The house sat there looking thoroughly settled into its surroundings, the kind of place that has clearly witnessed decades of proper living. A covered terrace wrapped around one side, and I could already picture myself sitting there with morning coffee, pretending I understood the rhythms of rural Croatian life. The garden was generous without being fussy, with established trees offering shade and that particular stillness you only really find in Continental Croatia, away from the coastal crowds and their frantic beach towels.

Inside, the first impression was warmth. Not the performative warmth of somewhere trying too hard, but the genuine article: wooden furniture that had actually been used, a fireplace that looked like it earned its keep during winter, and a kitchen that smelled faintly of the previous guests' cooking. I found this oddly comforting. Someone had made goulash here, or perhaps a proper fish paprikash, and the ghost of their competence hung in the air alongside my own inadequacy.

I must confess to a moment of gentle self-reflection as I stood there in the hallway, still slightly muddy from my unintended detour, clutching my remaining groceries like some kind of bedraggled trophy. I had planned this escape so carefully. The spreadsheet of activities, the meticulously researched restaurants, the confident assumption that I would arrive composed and ready for relaxation. Instead I had arrived flustered, slightly lost, and one tomato down. And yet the house seemed entirely unbothered by my disarray. It simply waited, patient and solid, for me to catch up with myself.

The surrounding area of Pozega revealed itself in glimpses that first evening. I took a wander down quiet lanes, nodding at locals who nodded back with the easy acceptance of people accustomed to visitors finding their feet. The gentle hills of the Pozega Valley stretched in every direction, agricultural and green, with the Papuk Nature Park rising in the distance without being so dramatic as to demand immediate attention. Everything here felt measured, unhurried, properly continental in temperament.

By the time I finally sat on that terrace with a glass of the Grasevina I had managed not to drop, the chaos of arrival had softened into something almost fond. The Sat Nav betrayal, the goat encounter, the tomato's great escape. These would become the stories, I realised, far more than any perfectly executed journey could have been. The house had already started working its quiet magic, and I had barely unpacked.
