About Continental Croatia
The mishap came about twenty minutes into my detour, when my phone decided that GPS was merely a suggestion rather than a service. I found myself performing a seventeen-point turn in a clearing that I am fairly certain no human had visited since the Yugoslav era. The comedy peaked when I stepped out to assess the situation and immediately sank ankle-deep into what I desperately hoped was mud. It was not mud. A nearby farm had been spreading fertiliser, and I had parked in the one spot in Croatia where autumn's agricultural calendar intersected with my poor navigation skills. By the time I reached the property, the November dusk had settled properly. The low sun had turned the Slavonian countryside into something almost embarrassingly beautiful, golden light catching the last stubborn leaves on the oak trees that dot this part of Continental Croatia. I stood there on the gravel drive, one boot still bearing forensic evidence of my earlier adventure, and felt that particular mixture of exhaustion and relief that only comes from holiday travel that has gone slightly wrong. The house itself sat perfectly in its setting, a traditional country property that made immediate sense of the season. The thick walls, the wooden shutters, the covered terrace that would be glorious in summer but now served as a windbreak against the continental chill that rolls across these plains in late autumn. I could smell woodsmoke from somewhere nearby, that distinctive November scent that makes you want to hibernate with a bottle of something decent. Inside, the seasonal influence was everything. The house was clearly designed for year-round living rather than the frantic summer turnover of coastal rentals. Proper heating, proper curtains, a kitchen that suggested someone had actually cooked a winter stew here rather than just assembling salads. I found myself gravitating to the covered terrace despite the cold, wrapped in a blanket I discovered in a cupboard, watching the mist begin to form in the valley below as the temperature dropped with that suddenness that characterises inland Croatian autumns. The local shop in nearby Pozega, when I ventured there the next morning, reinforced how the rhythm of life here follows the seasons without apology. No pretence at summer tourism, no English menus, just practical provisions and a butcher who seemed genuinely puzzled that anyone would visit deliberately in November. I bought sausages and sauerkraut and felt obscurely pleased with myself, as though I had passed some test of authenticity simply by arriving at the wrong time of year. That first evening, after my agricultural misadventure and the misty drive back from town, I sat with my questionable boots drying near the stove and understood something about seasonal travel that had previously escaped me. The house in November was not the house of July, and that was precisely its charm. The silence of the countryside, the early darkness that encouraged early wine, the proper cold that made the heating meaningful. I had come for a holiday and found, instead, the particular pleasure of temporary belonging in a place that was simply getting on with its autumnal business regardless of my presence. The kettle, when I finally used it, produced tea that tasted of nothing more than tea and relief, which is sometimes exactly what you need. |
