I have always believed that the best holidays begin with a small disaster, and our trip to Osijek Koritna did not disappoint. We had been driving through Continental Croatia for the better part of three hours, winding past sunflower fields that seemed to stretch to Hungary, when my partner announced with sudden confidence that he knew a shortcut. Reader, he did not know a shortcut. What followed was twenty minutes of gravel roads, a tense encounter with a very free-range goose, and the slow realisation that our sat nav had quietly given up on us entirely. By the time we found the cottage, I had developed what I can only describe as a twitch.

But then we turned down the lane, and there it was. A modest wooden house with a covered terrace, tucked into greenery so thick and peaceful it felt like stepping through a portal into another, slower dimension. The garden was not manicured in that intimidating English way, but generous and slightly wild, with fruit trees and a lawn that begged for bare feet. I stood there with my suitcase still in the car, already forgetting the goose.

The first thing we did was absolutely nothing. This is not a holiday narrative where we unpacked efficiently and set off for local attractions. We sat on those terrace chairs, drank the lukewarm coffee from our travel flask, and watched a neighbour's cat make its slow patrol along the fence. It took forty-five minutes. It was magnificent.

Continental Croatia in late summer has a particular quality of light, warm and golden, that makes everything feel slightly dreamlike. The cottage at Osijek Koritna is positioned to catch this perfectly. The terrace became our headquarters, our dining room, our reading nook, our evening wine bar. I had brought three books and finished none of them, which I consider the true measure of a successful lazy holiday. There is something deeply satisfying about reading the same paragraph four times because you keep drifting off to watch a bee negotiate a flower.

The garden demanded very little and offered everything. Mornings began with the discovery of which plums had ripened overnight, a small detective operation that felt genuinely thrilling. We developed elaborate theories about the best spot for afternoon shade, moving our chairs with the solemnity of astronomers tracking the sun. One afternoon I lay on the grass for so long that a small spider established a web between my knee and the ground. I consider this a compliment.

There is a particular pleasure in doing very little somewhere new, I have decided. At home, idleness carries a weight of guilt, a sense that one ought to be productive, improved, optimised. At Osijek Koritna, with the warm air and the distant sound of someone else's radio, productivity felt like a language I had simply forgotten. We cooked simple meals from the local market, ate them slowly, washed up even more slowly. We took walks to the village and back, a round trip of perhaps two miles, which felt like sufficient exercise for several days.

On our final evening, my partner attempted to recreate his shortcut in reverse, purely for closure. We got lost again, though only slightly, and laughed about it in a way we had not managed on arrival. I think that is what places like this do. They give you room to find your way back to each other, and to yourself, without any particular effort at all. We left with our books unfinished, our skin slightly browner, and a shared understanding that sometimes the best journey is the one that goes absolutely nowhere.
