About Continental Croatia
I should have trusted my gut when the sat-nav started pronouncing "Bjelovar" like a sneeze, but there I was, barrelling down a road that grew narrower with every kilometre until I was essentially driving through someone's front garden in Continental Croatia. The mishap? I'd punched "Maglenca" into my phone three hours earlier and only discovered, upon reaching what was definitely a pig farm, that I'd been following directions to a village with a suspiciously similar name somewhere near Zagreb. The farmer found it hilarious. I found it less so, particularly as my Croatian extends to "pivo" and frantic hand gestures.

By the time I actually located the proper turning for Bjelovar Maglenca, the light was doing that golden thing it does in late afternoon, and I'd developed what I can only describe as a profound relationship with the area's unmarked junctions. The property sat at the end of a lane that I'd have missed entirely without the helpful intervention of an elderly gentleman walking what appeared to be three goats on a rope. He simply pointed, nodded, and carried on as if directing lost Brits was a daily occurrence.

First impressions hit differently when you've been thoroughly humbled by geography. The house itself was modest and unassuming, the sort of place you'd cycle past without a second glance, which was precisely its charm. A covered terrace wrapped around one side, and someone had planted tomatoes in old buckets with the enthusiastic randomness of a person who gardens by instinct rather than instruction. The key was exactly where the instructions said: under a flowerpot that contained, rather brilliantly, a spare key and a very confused snail.

I dumped my bags with the theatrical exhaustion of someone who'd just completed an unintended tour of rural Croatia and stepped back onto the lane, determined to stretch my legs before darkness fell. This is where the magic started, though I didn't recognise it immediately. I walked with no destination, which is entirely unlike me, and within ten minutes found myself at a small chapel I'd never have located deliberately. It sat alone in a field, door unlocked, interior smelling of beeswax and something else I couldn't name. A handwritten note in several languages asked visitors to light a candle if moved to do so. I was moved, though mainly by the absurdity of my day.

Wandering further, I stumbled into what I can only describe as a clearing where someone had arranged stones into rough seating around a fire pit. No signage, no explanation, just evidence of human presence and intention. I sat there until the mosquitoes found me, watching the sky shift through colours I don't have names for, and felt something loosen in my chest that I hadn't realised was tight.

The thing about getting properly lost is that it strips away the performance of being a tourist. I had no itinerary to consult, no recommended spots to tick off, no photograph to replicate. I was simply present in a place that owed me nothing and offered everything on its own quiet terms. The Bjelovar area doesn't shout; it waits for you to slow down enough to notice it.

That evening, I walked back to the house by starlight, having forgotten to bring a torch, and found the terrace again by memory and the faint glow of a neighbour's window. I sat with a beer I didn't chill properly, because I'd not yet worked out the fridge, and listened to nothing much happening very peacefully indeed.

The next morning, I set out deliberately to get lost again, which is perhaps the truest measure of how thoroughly the place had worked on me. I found a pond where locals apparently swim, though no one had thought to mention it in any guide. I found a woman selling honey from her gate, pricing it by conversation rather than weight. I found myself, which sounds terribly earnest written down, but there it is.

Some holidays you plan meticulously. Others, like my time at Bjelovar Maglenca, begin with a sat-nav betrayal and unfold into something you couldn't have mapped if you'd tried. I never did learn the name of that pig farmer, but I owe him a debt of gratitude for setting me on the wrong path that turned out to be exactly right.
