About Central Dalmatian Riviera
The drive to Seget Vranjica took about twenty minutes, winding along a coast that already had me forgiving myself the sunglasses incident. May in Central Dalmatia is that glorious shoulder season when the hills are still absurdly green from spring rains, the wildflowers are having their final hurrah, and the summer hordes have not yet descended. The roads were quiet enough that I could actually appreciate the olive groves terraced into the hillsides without someone in a German-registered SUV breathing down my neck. Arriving at the property, I immediately understood why this particular week had felt like stealing something precious. The terrace overlooked a bay so calm it might have been painted that morning. In July, I later learned from the neighbour, you would be sharing that view with a small armada of boats and the distant thump of beach club music drifting across the water. But in late May? Just the occasional fishing boat puttering out, and the sound of swallows diving for insects in the warm evening air. I stood there with my supermarket-bought wine, feeling deeply smug about my timing, until I remembered I still had no sunglasses and the evening glare off the sea was genuinely blinding. The seasonal timing shaped everything. The pool, which in August would be a social arena requiring strategic positioning, was simply there for the taking. I swam at odd hours without guilt. The water was not yet bath-warm, which meant it was actually refreshing rather than soup-adjacent. There is a particular pleasure to May swimming in Dalmatia, a slight shock followed by the realisation that your body is adjusting to something properly alive rather than merely heated. The local konoba I walked to that first evening was still in its pre-season rhythm. The owner had time to explain the menu without the glazed expression of someone who has already served four hundred tourists that day. We talked about the fishing, about how the mackerel were running early this year, about whether the summer would be a scorcher. These conversations feel different in May. There is still patience, still curiosity about who you are and why you have chosen this particular week when you could have waited for guaranteed sunshine. And that is the gentle revelation I kept returning to. We are so conditioned to chase peak conditions, peak weather, peak everything. Yet here was a week of mild imperfections, the occasional cloud, a few restaurants still closed for the season, and it felt like being let in on a secret. The jasmine was flowering along the terrace railings with an intensity that apparently fades once the real heat arrives. The evenings were cool enough to actually use the outdoor fireplace, which in summer would be absurd. I found my replacement sunglasses eventually, in a Trogir shop where the owner seemed faintly amused by my predicament. Wore them for approximately two hours before the light softened into that long, golden May evening that makes you wonder why anyone bothers with July at all. |
