About Central Dalmatian Riviera
I have never been so pleased to see a petrol station in my life. There we were, two hours into what should have been a straightforward drive from Split Airport, and I had just realised my phone had been giving directions in kilometres while the hire car's speedometer stubbornly displayed miles. No wonder I thought we were crawling along. My partner, who had been suspiciously quiet about my "scenic route" through every back road between Kastela and Okrug Gornji, finally cracked a smile when I admitted my mathematical incompetence. We stopped for a cold drink, laughed at my expense, and rolled the last few kilometres down to the coast with the windows down and the smell of pine and salt gradually replacing the airport car park.

The approach to Trogir Okrug Gornji does something wonderful to your shoulders. You feel them drop. The road narrows, the pines crowd in, and suddenly there is blue water glinting through the trees. Our holiday home sat tucked into a hillside, a modest stone building with terracotta roof tiles and a garden that had clearly been loved by someone with more patience for pruning than I will ever possess. I fumbled with the key box while my partner wrestled our cases from the boot, and then we were through the gate and standing on a terrace that looked down through olive trees toward Ciovo Channel.

I will be honest: I had packed with ambition. Walking shoes. A guidebook. Plans for Trogir Old Town, for boat trips, for being the sort of person who does things on holiday. That first evening, I sat on the terrace with a glass of local white wine, watching the light change over the water, and felt those plans quietly dissolve. The garden had a hammock strung between two pines. There was a stack of novels I had been meaning to read since approximately 2019. The nearest shop was a pleasant stroll away, but only if you could be bothered to put on proper shoes. I could not be bothered.

The days that followed settled into a rhythm so lazy it barely qualified as rhythm. Mornings began with coffee on the terrace, watching the local cats make their territorial rounds through the garden. I read in the hammock until my arms went numb, then moved to a sun lounger until I got too warm, then retreated to the dappled shade of the olive trees with another book. My partner developed a minor obsession with the outdoor grill and spent happy hours fussing over charcoal and local fish while I offered unhelpful commentary from my horizontal position.

There was a small pebble beach perhaps fifteen minutes' walk downhill, though "walk" suggests more purpose than I usually managed. I would potter down with a towel and a paperback, swim in water so clear it felt theatrical, then retreat to the garden before the afternoon heat peaked. The garden itself became my territory. I learned which corner caught the morning sun, which spot stayed cool enough for reading at midday, where to position myself for the evening breeze that carried the scent of rosemary and the distant sound of someone else's barbecue.

I did make it to Trogir Old Town once, briefly, wandering the narrow streets for an hour before feeling an almost physical pull back toward our quiet hillside. The cathedral was beautiful, the waterfront cafes charming, but I am not sure I was ready for beauty that required effort. I bought some cheese and wine at the market and retreated.

On our final evening, I sat in that same garden spot I had claimed as mine and watched the sun drop behind the channel, turning the water to beaten copper. My phone sat inside, ignored. The guidebook remained unopened in my case. I had walked perhaps three miles in ten days, read four novels, and achieved absolutely nothing that would impress anyone. I have rarely been so content. Some holidays are for seeing things. Others, I have learned, are for simply being somewhere quiet, letting the world narrow to the width of a garden, and discovering that doing very little can feel like quite enough.
