I have never been so relieved to see a washing line in my life. After a three-hour flight to Split, a bus journey that felt longer than my entire secondary education, and a determined march through Kucine with a wheelie case that developed a death wobble on every cobble, I finally found our holiday let. The key safe code worked first time, which felt like a minor miracle, and then I stepped into the garden and promptly walked into that washing line. Right across the temple. Not my finest moment, but the cherry tomatoes growing in the pot nearby seemed unbothered, and I decided to take my cue from them.

The cottage itself is one of those solid stone affairs that seem to absorb heat and sound in equal measure. Inside, everything was clean and straightforward: wooden beams, terracotta floors, furniture that invited you to sit down and stay there. I dumped my bags with theatrical exhaustion and opened the doors to the terrace, and that was more or less the last time I moved with any purpose for a week.

The garden became my entire world. There is something deeply satisfying about a private outdoor space where your most pressing decision is whether to read in the sun or the shade. I brought three books and finished none of them, which I consider a mark of success. I would start one, get drowsy by page twelve, and wake to the sound of a neighbour's dog or a distant church bell. The afternoons melted into each other. I learned the pattern of the grapevine above the terrace, how the leaves filtered the light differently as the week progressed. I became mildly obsessed with a particular lizard who lived in the wall near the outdoor shower. We had an understanding.

I did venture to the local shop in Kucine for bread and cheese and the kind of tomatoes that actually taste of something. That was the extent of my exploration. No day trips to Trogir, no ambitious hikes. I walked to the bakery once and felt quite exhausted by the effort, which I think says more about my usual pace of life than the distance involved. The baker spoke no English and my Croatian extends to "hvala" and apologetic smiling, but we managed. Everything tastes better when you have done almost nothing to earn it.

There was a hammock. I feel this deserves its own paragraph. I have never successfully entered a hammock with dignity, and this occasion was no exception. The first attempt involved an undignified scramble that nearly tipped me onto the herb bed. The second attempt, after some coaching from my partner that I did not request, was more successful. I spent a contented hour in that hammock watching clouds move at what felt like the correct speed for once. No notifications, no deadlines, just the occasional need to adjust my position before the blood left one of my legs entirely.

I did think, somewhere around day four, about whether I ought to be doing more. This is the modern condition, I suspect. The nagging sense that relaxation must be earned or optimised or at least photographed for evidence. I actively chose to ignore this feeling, which was itself a small act of rebellion. I have enough memories of holidays where I raced through sights and came home needing another holiday. This was the other kind. The kind where you remember the texture of the stone wall against your back, the particular cool of the cottage in the early morning, the way the fig tree dropped its fruit with soft thuds you only noticed because you were still enough to hear them.

On the last evening, I walked into that washing line again. Some people never learn.
