I have never been so relieved to see a washing line in my life. There it was, strung between two olive trees in the garden of Omis Celina, flapping with someone else's holiday towels like a flag of surrender. I had just spent the better part of an hour driving the winding coastal road from Split, white-knuckling every bend, only to discover that my phone's idea of "you have arrived" was a gravel track leading to someone's vineyard. Three wrong turns, one extremely confident Croatian dog, and a minor argument with a sat nav that I definitely won on points later, and there I was. Lost, sweaty, and genuinely considering whether I could live in the hire car.

The washing line saved me. I pulled in, found the actual entrance fifty metres further on, and promptly tripped over the doorstep with my suitcase. Nothing says "I've got this completely under control" like sprawling across a stone terrace with your shorts riding up and a wheelie bag rolling toward the herb garden.

But here's the thing about Omis Celina. Within about four minutes of lying there, slightly winded, I stopped caring. The place has that effect. The villa sits in this pocket of green between the mountains and the sea, close enough to Omis town that you could wander down for a swim if you absolutely had to, but positioned perfectly for doing absolutely nothing at all. And I mean that as the highest possible compliment.

I spent my first afternoon in the garden, which sounds more active than it was. There is a covered terrace with a table that became my headquarters. I would relocate from sun lounger to terrace chair to the patch of grass near the lemon tree with the book I had been meaning to read since approximately 2019. The book made no progress. I kept getting distracted by the smell of rosemary from the herb bed, or the way the afternoon light came through the vine leaves, or the extremely slow movements of a lizard who clearly understood the local pace of life better than I did.

The kitchen became a sort of ritual. Morning coffee on the terrace, watching the garden wake up. A late breakfast of bread and cheese and tomatoes that actually tasted of something. Then the serious business of deciding which horizontal surface to occupy next. Sometimes I would walk to the little pebble beach nearby, though "walk" suggests more purpose than I brought to it. I would get there eventually, float about for a bit, then drift back when I got hungry or bored or the sun moved.

I did go into Omis itself once, I think. There was an ice cream involved. I remember narrow streets and the fortress on the hill that I absolutely intended to climb, right up until I didn't. The Cetina River looked beautiful from the bridge. I stood there for a while, considered a kayak trip, and instead bought another ice cream and walked back slowly.

The real revelation was how little I needed to fill a day. No itinerary, no must-sees, no ticking boxes. Just the rhythm of light changing in the garden, the occasional breeze from the sea, the distant sound of someone else's barbecue. I read about forty pages of that book in a week. I have no regrets.

On my last morning I sat on the terrace with my coffee and watched the washing line again, empty now, turning slowly in the wind. I thought about all the holidays where I had rushed about, collecting experiences like stamps, and how this one had somehow given me more by asking less of me. Then I went back to bed for an hour. Some things you simply cannot rush.
