About Central Dalmatian Riviera
The villa sat perched above the coastline with one of those terraces that makes you immediately want to pour a cold drink and never move again. The British weather obsession dies hard though, and I spent my first morning pacing the terrace like a anxious meteorologist, watching clouds build over the Biokovo mountains. The forecast had promised uninterrupted sunshine. The mountains clearly had not checked their emails. By midday, a proper storm had rolled in, the kind that turns terracotta tiles slippery and sends tourists scurrying from beaches like startled crabs. I had planned a gentle coastal walk to Drvenik harbour, perhaps continuing along the shoreline path toward Zaostrog. The rain had other ideas. Instead, I found myself rummaging through the property's welcome folder, discovering a laminated local walks guide that someone had clearly prepared for exactly this situation. There was a route through the pine woods behind the village, mostly under tree cover, that promised to reach a viewpoint above the bay. I laced up my walking boots with the grim determination of someone who refuses to let precipitation ruin a perfectly good holiday. The path started promisingly enough, a proper stony track that wound between Aleppo pines smelling of warm resin despite the damp. Then the British weather instinct kicked in properly. I had packed for Mediterranean heat, not mountain precipitation, and my lightweight jacket proved about as waterproof as a teabag. Within twenty minutes, I was soaked through in that particular way that only happens when you have optimistically told yourself "it is just a shower." The path became a stream. My phone, consulting the map I had screenshot in a rare moment of foresight, became too wet to operate. I stood under a pine tree, water dripping down my neck, and laughed at the absurdity of it all. Here I was in beautiful Central Dalmatia, surrounded by some of the most spectacular coastline in Europe, and I had managed to recreate a damp Sunday in the Lake District. The self-reflection came slowly, as these things do when you are slightly cold and very ridiculous. I had planned this holiday with military precision, every walk mapped, every beach timed for optimal sun angle. The weather had simply reminded me that control is largely an illusion, particularly where holidays are concerned. I turned back toward the villa, squelching with every step, and decided that the terrace and that cold drink were not surrender but rather strategic adaptation. The storm passed by evening, as Mediterranean storms tend to do, leaving the air scrubbed clean and the Biokovo range looking freshly painted against a sky of impossible blue. I walked down to Drvenik harbour the next morning, the proper coastal route this time, and found a small konoba where the owner seemed genuinely impressed that I had attempted the pine forest path in yesterday's conditions. We communicated in a mixture of my terrible Croatian, his slightly better English, and universal hand gestures that thankfully involved no aggressive reversing. He recommended an evening walk along the shore toward Gradac when the heat dropped, and I filed this away with the satisfaction of someone whose holiday had finally found its proper rhythm. The British weather obsession never truly leaves us, I suspect. But standing on that terrace on my final evening, watching the sun settle behind the mountains while the scent of pine drifted up from the woods where I had once been thoroughly drenched, I felt something like peace with meteorological uncertainty. The walks I had planned and the walks I had actually taken were different creatures entirely. Both, in their own damp and sunny ways, had been absolutely worth it. |
