About Upper Austria
I have never been a natural navigator, which is why my decision to drive to Ebensee without a functioning sat nav felt, in hindsight, like the sort of choice you make when you have convinced yourself that "how hard can it be" is a legitimate travel strategy. The answer, as it turns out, is moderately hard. Hard enough that I found myself circling a petrol station near Gmunden three times, growing increasingly convinced that the lake I kept glimpsing was somehow following me out of spite.

The mishap came at a roundabout just outside Traunkirchen, where I finally admitted defeat and pulled over to wrestle with my phone's offline maps. In my enthusiasm to reconnect with civilisation, I knocked my coffee into the passenger footwell. Not a full cup, thankfully, but enough to make the car smell like a motorway services for the remainder of the journey. I sat there for a moment, watching a very patient Austrian woman in the car behind me, and thought about the sort of person I was becoming. Someone who packs a travel mug and then immediately destroys its contents. Someone who owns hiking boots but uses them primarily for walking to the shop.

The approach to Ebensee itself improved matters considerably. The road narrows and climbs, and suddenly the Salzkammergut does that thing where the mountains appear to have been arranged specifically for your personal enjoyment. I found the property down a lane that felt improbably rural, passing a farm where someone was doing something purposeful with hay. I waved. They did not wave back, which seemed fair.

The key collection involved a small safe with a code, and I will not pretend this went smoothly. I have always struggled with the assumption that I know which way a door opens, and the property's entrance tested this limitation within seconds. The handle moved, the door did not, and I stood there performing what I can only describe as a small pantomime of frustration until I realised I had not actually turned the key fully. This is who I am now. A man who stands in the Austrian countryside arguing with inanimate objects.

Stepping inside, though, the chaos of the journey fell away with embarrassing speed. The place had that particular stillness of a house that has been waiting, not impatiently, for someone to arrive. I could see the lake immediately through the windows, or at least a slice of it, and the light was doing that late-afternoon thing where everything looks slightly golden and forgiving. I stood in the kitchen with my bag still on my shoulder and just looked for a while, forgetting to put the kettle on, forgetting even about the coffee slowly drying in the car.

The first evening I did almost nothing. I walked briefly to the edge of the village, found a path that seemed to lead upward, and retreated when I realised I was not wearing the correct footwear for enthusiasm. Back at the house, I cooked something basic with ingredients from a small supermarket I had passed in my earlier confusion, and I sat on the terrace as the light faded. The mountains became silhouettes, then disappeared entirely into darkness, and I could hear nothing but the occasional cowbell and my own breathing, which had finally slowed to something approaching normal.

I thought about the coffee again, briefly, and smiled. Some arrivals are messy. This one had been mine entirely.
