I may have shouted something triumphant that made a nearby cow flinch.

Somewhere on the winding road between Deutschlandsberg and the middle of nowhere, I had convinced myself that Austrian country properties use the same key safe system as every British holiday let I have ever encountered. We stood on the doorstep with our suitcases, smugness dissolving rapidly, while I performed the slow realisation that I am precisely the sort of person who prepares for the wrong emergency entirely.

I stayed with the luggage and made friends with a very persistent chicken who clearly believed my sandals contained something edible. But then the door opened, and honestly, the chaos of arrival began to feel worthwhile. Waldheimat is the sort of place that makes you exhale without meaning to. The sitting room has a wood-burning stove that looks like it has witnessed significant conversations, and windows that frame the Koralpe mountains in a way that feels almost aggressively picturesque, as if the landscape is showing off.

I immediately developed a theory that wooden houses in Styria exist specifically to make British people feel inadequate about our plasterboard existences. The beams are actual beams. You could hang from them if the mood took you, though I have not tested this and the guest information folder presumably discourages it.

The kitchen revealed our next discovery: no kettle. I stood before the hob with the sort of blank expression I reserve for foreign cookers, realising that Austrians apparently boil water in a saucepan like sensible people who have never become addicted to instant gratification. My partner found this hilarious. I found it character-building. The tea, when it finally happened, tasted of minor triumph.

By evening, the mishaps had settled into something almost fond. We sat on the terrace with wine from a nearby Vulkanland vineyard, watching the light change over the forests that give this region its name. The Waldheimat, literally "forest home," is not trying to impress you with anything artificial. It simply exists in its wooden, mountainside way, indifferent to whether you remembered the correct key procedure.

Hildegard had wandered off to pursue other interests. The sat nav sat silent and unrepentant in the car. I had saucepan-boiled water and a view that made my usual Tuesday evenings feel like they belonged to someone else's life entirely. Some arrivals are smooth. Others involve chickens and wrong assumptions and the particular humbling that comes from realising you are not, in fact, as prepared as you believed. I would not swap this one. The chaos made the quiet feel earned.
