About Styria
First impressions of the place hit me before I even opened the car door. You know that silence that actually has weight to it? Not the awkward kind at a bad dinner party, but the thick, purposeful quiet of mountains doing their thing without bothering anyone. I stood there with my suitcase half-dragged from the boot, just listening to nothing much at all, until a woodpecker somewhere started up and made me jump half out of my skin. The house itself sat at that perfect angle where you get morning sun on the terrace and afternoon shade for reading without squinting. I had grand plans for systematic exploration, maybe a laminated itinerary. Those plans lasted precisely until the following morning, when I took a wrong turn on what I thought was the marked walking route and ended up somewhere entirely better. The path petered out after about forty minutes into something that was definitely not on any map I had. I should have turned back. Everyone sensible would have turned back. Instead I followed a stream that sounded louder than it had any right to be, pushing through some enthusiastic undergrowth that left me with twigs in my hair and a growing suspicion I was being ridiculous. Then the trees opened up. A meadow, impossibly green, with a single wooden bench that looked older than my grandparents. Someone had placed it there decades ago, facing a view down the valley that no brochure could do justice to. I sat. I stayed. A hawk circled below me at one point, which felt backwards and wonderful. No phone signal, no other humans, just me and my questionable navigation skills having accidentally found something genuinely extraordinary. This became the pattern of the week. The bakery in Oberwolz town that I only located because I got hopelessly turned around trying to find the supermarket. The swimming spot in the Mur river where locals actually go, discovered when a path I assumed looped back instead kept going until I heard splashing and laughter through the trees. The elderly man tending vegetables in a clearing who spoke no English and my German extends only to ordering beer and apologising, yet who pressed tomatoes into my hands with such insistence that refusing felt like an international incident. Each evening I returned to the house with muddy boots and some new accidental discovery. The terrace became my debriefing spot, wine glass in hand, recounting the day's navigational failures to the mountains that frankly could not care less. I started to notice how the light changed across the valley at different hours, how the distant cow bells created their own irregular rhythm, how silence itself became something I actively sought rather than merely accepted. On my final morning I tried to find that meadow again, properly this time, with maps and purpose. Could not locate it. The stream seemed different, the undergrowth wrong, the angles not matching my memory. Perhaps I imagined the whole thing, or perhaps some places only reveal themselves to the properly lost. I prefer the second explanation. I left Oberwolz with tomatoes long finished, boots still muddy, and absolutely no faith in my sense of direction. Also no regrets whatsoever. Some holidays you plan meticulously and execute perfectly. Others you bumble through, follow the wrong paths, and accidentally find exactly what you needed. This was firmly the second sort, and I would not have changed a single wrong turn. |
