About Lower Austria
Turns out the actual road to our holiday home was the well-maintained one we'd ignored ten minutes earlier. Classic. But then we rounded the final bend and there it was. The cottage sat quietly among trees with Afritz am See glimmering beyond the garden, and I felt that lovely little shift in my chest where holiday properly begins. The mishap melted away like the foolish thing it was. We grabbed our bags, fumbled with the key box, and practically fell through the door in that giddy way you do when you've been travelling too long and suddenly need to inspect every room immediately. The place had that wonderful lived-in warmth you cannot manufacture. Wooden beams, comfortable furniture that invited slumping rather than sitting, and windows that framed the garden like paintings. I opened the back door and stepped onto the terrace, and that was more or less where I stayed for the next hour, breathing in lake-scented air and watching nothing much happen. A neighbour pottered past with a dog. Some leaves moved slightly. It was magnificent. We had brought books, you see. Actual physical books, the kind with pages that rustle. Mine was a chunky paperback I had been carrying optimistically for months, always too busy to crack it open. Here, within twenty minutes of arrival, I was three chapters deep with my feet on a garden chair and a cup of tea going cold beside me. My partner had found a hammock somewhere and was making occasional contented noises that required no response. The garden became our world. Mornings meant coffee outside in that particular stillness before the day warmed up. Afternoons drifted into each other through reading, dozing, and the occasional wander down to dip toes in the lake. We cooked simple meals and ate them slowly on the terrace as the light changed. Someone nearby had a barbecue going one evening, and the smell of it drifting across felt like the neighbourhood's way of saying hello without bothering us. I kept meaning to plan something. A proper outing, a bit of sightseeing, the responsible tourist's checklist. But each morning I would wake to birds and the soft light through the curtains, and the ambition would dissolve into another lazy day. There was a moment, perhaps day three, when I caught myself feeling slightly guilty about this. Should we not be doing more? Seeing more? I mentioned it to my partner, who looked up from their book with the expression of someone who had already solved this puzzle. "We're doing exactly enough," they said. Which was annoyingly correct. The lake itself asked nothing of us. We swam when we felt like it, which was less often than we expected because the garden kept holding us in its green embrace. We walked the shoreline path slowly, stopping to watch dragonflies and to discuss nothing important. Everything felt stretched and spacious in a way my normal life never does. By the end, I realised the sat nav's rebellion had been a gift of sorts. That wrong turn had made the arrival sweeter, sharpened the relief, deepened the letting go. We left reluctantly, slightly more freckled, significantly more rested, my book finally finished and my partner's hammock imprint still visible on their consciousness. I cannot tell you much about the surrounding area beyond a few miles. We never really explored it. We were too busy doing gloriously little, and I would not change a single lazy day. |
