I have never been a natural navigator, and my arrival at the Deutsch Schutzen in Burgenland proved this beyond all doubt. What should have been a straightforward three-hour drive from Vienna turned into something of an odyssey after I confidently ignored the satnav and decided to follow my own sense of direction. This was, in retrospect, a catastrophic error. I found myself down a dirt track surrounded by sunflower fields, utterly convinced I had discovered a shortcut. I had not. I had discovered a dead end, a very confused farmer, and the uncomfortable realisation that my German extends barely beyond ordering a beer and apologising profusely.

By the time I actually located the property, I was forty minutes late, slightly sweaty, and in desperate need of the very beer my limited vocabulary could secure. The house sits in a quiet spot near the village of Deutsch Schutzen, surrounded by the gentle rolling hills that characterise this corner of eastern Austria. I had chosen Burgenland partly for its wine reputation and partly because it seemed the sort of unhurried place where a person could recover from city life. The first impression, once I finally stopped the car and stepped out, was of profound silence. Not the awkward silence of a dinner party gone wrong, but the restorative kind, broken only by distant birdsong and what I later learned was a neighbour's rather enthusiastic cockerel.

The property itself is a traditional Austrian house, nothing flashy, nothing pretending to be something it is not. I fumbled with the key box for several embarrassing minutes, dropping the code sheet twice and somehow managing to scrape my knuckle on the wall. A small injury, but one I would notice every time I reached for a glass of the local Blaufrankisch over the coming days. The door swung open to reveal a interior that smelled of wood polish and something faintly herbal, perhaps from the garden outside. I stood in the hallway with my ridiculous oversized suitcase, suddenly aware that I had packed for approximately three climates and none of them appropriately.

The kitchen struck me first as properly equipped, the sort where someone actually cooks rather than just reheats. I opened the fridge out of habit, finding it empty and clean, which felt simultaneously like a disappointment and a challenge. The living area had that particular quality of Austrian country furniture, solid and functional, the kind of chairs that keep your posture honest whether you like it or not. I lowered myself into one and immediately understood that slouching would not be tolerated. The house demanded a certain uprightness, a physical metaphor for the region perhaps.

I wandered out to the garden, still clutching my car keys like some security blanket. The private terrace looked out towards those same hills I had glimpsed in my earlier, misguided navigation attempts. Now they appeared welcoming rather than mocking. A barbecue sat in one corner, slightly rusted, clearly used and used properly. I made a mental note to attempt grilling something ambitious later in the week, a note I would wisely ignore.

My first evening passed in a blur of unpacking badly, discovering I had forgotten proper coffee, and making a trip to the nearby village shop where my pointing and smiling technique secured the essentials. Back at the house, I sat on that terrace with a mediocre cup of instant and watched the light fade. The chaos of my arrival already felt like a different holiday entirely, something that had happened to a slightly more incompetent version of myself. The Deutsch Schutzen had not asked me to arrive gracefully. It simply waited, patient and solid, for me to catch up with where I actually was.
