A holiday for two in a rustic Kellerstöckl. This small holiday cottage is located in southern Burgenland, almost on the border with Hungary. Formerly used as a cellar (wine cellar for winegrowers), you can now enjoy your holiday in this simple but cosy holiday cottage in southern Burgenland. In the parlour there is a rustic wood-burning cooker. Adjacent is the brightly furnished bedroom and the bathroom. You can make yourself comfortable in front of the house and enjoy a view as far as Hungary. Burgenland attracts nature lovers, and you can observe rare bird species on hikes through beautiful countryside. A horseback ride into the countryside offers just as much variety as a relaxing day of swimming at the Burg bathing lake (10 km away).

About Burgenland
I have never been so happy to see a cow in my life. Three hours after leaving Vienna, two wrong turns past Eisenstadt, and one spectacular argument with a sat nav that insisted Deutsch Schutzen was "in two hundred metres" for a solid fifteen minutes, we finally spotted the actual village sign. My wife was gripping the door handle like she was auditioning for a white-knuckle ride. The kids had reached that delirious stage of travel where everything is either hilarious or grounds for a tantrum. Mostly tantrums.

The mishap came right at the end, naturally. I turned into what I confidently announced was "definitely the drive" and promptly grounded our hire car on a cattle grid. Not a dramatic grounding, you understand. Just enough of a scrape to make me wince, reverse with what I hoped looked like intentional nonchalance, and discover I had tried to enter a neighbour's field. The neighbour, a chap in overalls who looked like he had seen this exact scene roughly four thousand times before, waved us toward the actual property without even setting down his mug. Burgenland hospitality, I suppose. They do not judge. They just point.

The proper entrance to the Deutsch Schutzen cottage was only slightly less challenging. A narrow lane, overhung with branches, that opened suddenly onto a proper little clearing. And there it was. Red roof, wooden balcony, that particular Austrian farmhouse solidity that makes you feel immediately like you have stepped into a slightly more wholesome version of your own life. My daughter announced it looked "like where Heidi would live if she had Wi-Fi." This is now my standard for rural accommodation.

First impressions, once we stopped moving and I stopped pretending the car scrape had not happened, were of overwhelming quiet. Not silence exactly. Birds, distant tractors, what I later learned was a proper stork nest somewhere nearby making that distinctive clattering noise they do. But no traffic hum, no background roar. My ears actually needed a moment to adjust. The kids stood still, which never happens. My wife closed her eyes and actually smiled, the first genuine one since the airport.

The cottage itself had that brilliant lived-in quality that holiday rentals so often miss. Proper worn stairs, creaky in the right places. A kitchen that looked like actual people cooked actual meals there, not just staged photographs. Someone had left a bottle of local Blaufrankisch on the counter, which I opened immediately out of sheer relief. It was excellent. Of course it was. This is Burgenland. They probably have to pass a wine quality test to get their post delivered.

We dumped bags with the chaotic energy of people who have been in transit too long. The children claimed bedrooms with the strategic ruthlessness of small diplomats. I found the balcony, sank into a chair that had clearly been sat in by hundreds of equally relieved holidaymakers before me, and watched the light change over the vineyards. That soft, golden, end-of-afternoon light that makes everything look like you have accidentally wandered into a tourism brochure.

Dinner that first night was a complete shambles, which felt exactly right. Local bread, local cheese, some ham from the shop in the village we had not quite reached yet so my wife improvised with what we had. The kids ate outside until the mosquitoes arrived, which in Burgenland is less of an if and more of a when. We retreated laughing, slapping at ankles, feeling like we had already been there a week.

I sat up later than I should, nursing that wine, listening to nothing much at all. The sat nav sat in the corner like a guilty secret. Tomorrow we would explore properly, find the actual village, work out where the storks nested. But that first evening was just for arriving, for the particular pleasure of having finally got somewhere that felt worth the journey, wrong turns and cattle grids included.
